What Would a Ravens All-Time 53-man Roster Look Like?

Last Sunday the Ravens marked the 30th anniversary of officially being known as, well, the Ravens.

For the NFL and its rich history, the Ravens, while no longer in the infancy stage of their franchise, are probably in that moody, eye-rolling pre-teen stage where everything you say or do is instantly questioned and…

Sorry. I have one at home. It’s in the fore-front of my mind these days.

Regardless, though 30 years is not old in the NFL world, the Ravens have managed to stuff a couple Lombardi trophies, eventual-gold-jacket draft picks and a rich, vibrant history into that time. So, as we sit around and wait for the draft and any free-agent signings that might still come down the pike, I decided to tackle an all-time 53-man roster for the franchise, and it looks like it could ably compete with anybody.

We had more defenders than offensive players, which shouldn’t surprise anybody who has followed this team over the years. And it is an interesting mixture of players of old and today’s stars.

Head Coach: John Harbaugh

The Ravens have only had three, and I’m well-aware there were some rough sentiments from many in The Flock towards Harbaugh by the end. But he had a historic run. He went 180-113 and counted a Super Bowl win amongst his 13 playoff wins. He also had an NFL-record eight road wins in the playoffs with the Ravens. This is a no-brainer.

Offensive Coordinator: Todd Monken

There wasn’t a lot of competition here, frankly. Gary Kubiak was great, but he was only in Baltimore one year. After that? Greg Roman? I think I’ll go ahead and stick with Monken.

Defensive Coordinator: Marvin Lewis

This one did have some other able candidates, such as Rex Ryan, Mike Macdonald and Don Martindale. However, Lewis was the clear choice here for me, and he laid the groundwork for a tradition of defensive excellence.

Quarterbacks: Lamar Jackson, Joe Flacco

This was pretty easy. Two-time MVP and the quarterback who led the most successful run in Ravens history as the top two guys. I don’t think we’re including Stoney Case or Kyle Boller in this conversation.

Running Backs: Jamal Lewis, Ray Rice, Derrick Henry, Willis McGahee

This is a great batch, and it was hard not to include Priest Holmes. Henry has only played in Baltimore two seasons, but they have been ridiculous ones, so there’s that. Ray rice is the best all-around back the Ravens have ever had, and McGahee was better than many might remember. He rushed for 2,800 yards and 31 touchdowns in Baltimore.

Receivers: Derrick Mason, Anquan Boldin, Zay Flowers, Torrey Smith, Steve Smith, Sr., Michael Jackson

To me, Mason remains the best receiver in Ravens history, and Boldin will always hold a special place in The Flock’s collective heart. But Flowers could very-well claim the top spot here by the time he’s done. Torrey Smith was explosive and tremendous at drawing DPI calls, while Steve Smith Sr. and Michael Jackson both lit up the field in their times in Baltimore.

Tight Ends: Mark Andrews, Todd Heap, Shannon Sharpe

Andrews is the choice here by far, and Heap is the clear second to me. It came to Sharpe or Dennis Pitta for that third slot, but Sharpe was so instrumental in that 2000 playoff run that I had to give him the nod, even though Pitta was a good contributor for the Ravens’ 2012 title.

Offensive Line: Jonathan Ogden, Ben Grubbs, Tyler Linderbaum, Marshal Yanda, Ronnie Stanley, Matt Birk, Orlando Brown, Edwin Mulitalo

That first five would form a terrific line, and are the clear “top five” to me. Others I considered were Orlando Brown Jr. and Michael Oher.

Defensive Line – Haloti Ngata, Michael McCrary, Tony Siragusa, Sam Adams, Brandon Williams, Nnamdi Madubuike

Shew, this line would absolutely destroy people, and it doesn’t even include Rob Burnett, one of my favorite Ravens and the first jersey I ever owned. The Ravens would beat a bunch of other all-time teams just through the force of this line.

Edge — Terrell Suggs, Peter Boulware, Elvis Dumervil, Adalius Thomas, Matthew Judon

Ah, remember when the Ravens could rush with four guys and wreak havoc? These guys were all parts of units that could do just that.

Linebacker — Ray Lewis, CJ Mosley, Roquan Smith, Bart Scott

Perhaps the greatest linebacker to ever tie up cleats, and a cast of Pro Bowlers sharing that room with him. While the line would eat up almost everything in front of them, this unit would clean up what was left and leave woozy ball-carriers strewn across the field.

Cornerbacks — Chris McAlister, Marlon Humphrey, Lardarius Webb, Jimmy Smith, Duane Starks, Samari Rolle

McAlister might be the most underrated player in Ravens history as time marches on. He was terrific, and could shut down elite receivers and turn the ball over. Humphrey has been a bit up and down, but he makes big plays, fights through injuries and had a run where he was as good in coverage as anybody. All the other guys could start for me any day.

Safety — Ed Reed, Kyle Hamilton, Rod Woodson, Eric Weddle

This group is absolutely stacked, and could probably compete against any other franchise’s safety room. Reed, like Lewis, could be argued as the best to ever play his position, and Hamilton is beginning to get into all-time consideration himself. Woodson and Weddle saw their best days in other cities, but both were very, very good in Baltimore.

Returner — Jamal Lewis

This could easily be Jacoby Jones, as well. Personal preference, and possibly a University of Maryland bias, points me to Lewis.

Specialists — Justin Tucker, Sam Koch, Morgan Cox

The Wolfpack stands alone. Tucker had a horrific ending to his time in Baltimore, but is possibly the best kicker to ever play the game. Koch was a master of having several different punts “in his bag” and Cox was as reliable as one can be as a long-snapper.
