Cole Kmet, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears have redoubled their efforts the past two offseasons surrounding quarterback Caleb Williams with young ascendng talent, and one of general manager Ryan Poles’ selections in the 2026 NFL Draft may have sent a strong message to one of the offense’s most consistent veteran contributors.

After watching Colston Loveland emerge as one of the brightest young tight ends in the sport, as a rookie, in 2025, the Bears dipped back into the tight end well during last month’s draft, selecting former Stanford tight end Sam Roush, with the No. 69 overall pick in the third round.

Chicago Bears’ Sam Roush selection could send a message to Cole Kmet

Over at ESPN, top analyst Field Yates put together some of the picks that impressed him the most from Friday and Saturday of draft weekend, including the Bears landing Roush.

“Roush has an assortment of tight end skills,” Yates writes of Chicago’s third-round pick for ESPN. “Being a premium athlete for his 6-foot-5, 260-pound size. He figures to assume the valuable TE3 role that Durham Smythe played for the Bears last season, along with being a major special teams factor.

“Roush should see the field plenty considering that Smythe played 25% of Chicago’s offensive snaps and 50% of its special teams snaps in 2025.”

Head coach Ben Johnson cutting into Smyth’s snaps with Roush seems like the floor, for the former Cardinal standout.

Last season, at Stanford, Roush caught 49 passes for 545 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but he was far more effective in a blocking role.

Given that Cole Kmet, 27, is set to see his cap number balloon to $15.47 million in 2027, the final year of his four-year contract, the Bears could look to use Roush in a similar fashion to start the clock ticking on resetting the finances at tight end.

After all, Roush was widely viewed as one of the premier blocking tight ends in the entire class, which could telegraph an expanded role immediately, and the beginning of the end for a high priced veteran, like Kmet.
