Chicago Bears: Mayor blasts Gov. JB Pritzker after stadium comments: Report
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is holding on to an outdated idea that the Chicago Bears can remain in the city.
The Bears are still in conversations with Chicago about a new stadium project, but the NFL Stadium Committee told the team last month that only the sites at Arlington Heights or Hammond, Indiana, were viable options at this point. The NFL was urging the Bears to make a decision with haste.
On Monday, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said that while he wanted the Bears to remain in Chicago, Johnson didn’t have an actionable plan to keep the team.
“He (Johnson) has come up with no plan at all about how the Bears would end up in the city of Chicago,” Pritzker said. “So, that’s problematic. I’d love them to be in the city, but we are three years in now, and he still has no plan.”

Per Mary Ann Ahern of NBC Chicago, Johnson called Pritzker out of touch because of his status as a billionaire.
“The feud continues,” she posted on X. (Johnson) says (Pritzker’s) billionaire status puts him out of touch as the two disagree over efforts to build a Chicago Bears stadium in Arlington Heights.”
Last week, Johnson argued the state should not incentivize the Bears to build a private stadium.
“There’s no good reason to incentivize the Bears to leave the top tourist destination in Illinois or to gift them property tax reprieve when they already don’t pay property taxes on a publicly owned stadium,” Johnson wrote on his X account last week. “The Bears belong in downtown Chicago.”
While Johnson is calling out Pritzker, it remains to be seen what Chicago’s plan would be to keep the Bears. Pritzker isn’t doing a great job at keeping the Bears from leaving the state either, as the Senate has yet to add amendments and pass a megaprojects bill that passed the House in April.
