White Sox get Colson Montgomery warning that should make them think twice

The Chicago White Sox have been one of the top feel-good stories in baseball this season, and much of that has to do with a surprisingly potent lineup that is currently second in the MLB in home runs.

While Munetaka Murakami has stolen the show with 17 homers, the White Sox have also gotten terrific production from Colson Montgomery (13) and Miguel Vargas (11), giving them a very strong upper half of the batting order.

Chicago’s early arrival on the contending scene could absolutely change things for the club as far as the trade deadline is concerned, as Will Venable’s squad might very well turn into a buyer rather than a seller before Aug. 3.

That being said, the White Sox should still be very cautious with how they proceed here, because they absolutely do not want to ruin this rebuild which clearly has them headed in the right direction.

Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter sent Chicago a pretty stern warning in that regard, advising the Southsiders to avoid trading Montgomery at all costs.

Now in his second big-league season, Montgomery is slashing .234/.333/.515 with those 13 long balls to go along with 31 RBI, and that follows a strong showing during his rookie campaign when he slashed .239/.311/.529 with 21 dingers and 55 RBI in 71 games.

Teams will surely be asking about Montgomery in trade discussions, but Reuter feels the White Sox shouldn’t budge.

“With breakout slugger Munetaka Murakami signed for just two years before he can again test the open market and aim for greener pastures, Montgomery is the clear choice for the White Sox,” Reuter wrote. “After slugging 21 homers as a rookie, he has a 139 OPS+ with 13 home runs and 1.7 WAR through his first 45 games in 2026.”

In other words, with Murakami potentially bolting Chicago after 2027, the White Sox must ensure Montgomery is still aboard so they aren’t left with nothing.

Not that Chicago would even really consider moving the 24-year-old shortstop, anyway.

Montgomery is under club control through 2031 and has also shown to be a surprisingly good defender at his position. Remember: when he was in the minor leagues, some felt he was ultimately destined for third base, but he has been very impressive at short.

There is absolutely no reason for the White Sox to entertain the thought of moving Montgomery, but if they were thinking about potentially making a trade for an established star (which probably isn’t going to happen), Montgomery should still be off the table.
