The Chicago Blackhawks have some moves they need to make this offseason to get into the contending window. After a season where they finished 29-39-14 record and received the fourth pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, there is a chance to significantly improve the roster. There are different ways the Blackhawks can attack this offseason, but what free agent should they target? Let’s take a closer look at who one outlet believes they should go after.
The Chicago Blackhawks can target Mario Ferraro in free agency
The Athletic had their NHL staff create an article highlighting one player each team should target in free agency. For Chicago, they had San Jose Sharks left defenseman Mario Ferraro as the team’s target. Below is what Blackhawks writer Scott Powers wrote about this fit:
“The Blackhawks could use a veteran defenseman to bring some stability to their young group. They probably have a little more flexibility on the left side than the right, so someone such as Ferraro could make sense. From his defensive play to his toughness to his puck-moving ability, he could fit in well with what Chicago already has. The main question is whether the Blackhawks would be willing to sign him to a long-term deal.”
Ferraro has spent his entire career with San Jose. The former second-round pick in 2017 has 114 points (24 goals, 90 assists) in 390 career games. He has been the model of playing every game, only missing eight games over the course of the previous three seasons. Ferraro signed a four-year, $13 million extension with the Sharks following his rookie contract, so it will be intriguing to see how much more than the $3.25 million average annual value he will command on the free agent market.
Chicago has some depth at the left defense position with Alex Vlasic and Wyatt Kaiser, but they could certainly use some veteran leadership at the position. The Blackhawks have the cap space available to make upgrades like Ferraro happen, so it will be intriguing to see how general manager Kyle Davidson and his staff address ways to improve the roster this offseason.
