Chicago Blackhawks reportedly open to trading this player’s rights
The Chicago Blackhawks are getting ready for one of their most significant offseasons in recent memory. They have a bevvy of salary cap space and some major draft capital to improve the roster. There are some decisions that general manager Kyle Davidson and his staff need to make, but could they get something for an impending free agent in six weeks? The Chicago Blackhawks could trade away Ilya Mikheyev’s rights
During Monday’s edition of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, Sportsnet’s Eliotte Friedman reported that the Blackhawks are making pending unrestricted free agent forward Ilya Mikheyev’s signing rights available via trade. Mikheyev is approaching the end of his four-year deal, which he signed in July 2022.
Mikheyev signed the contract with the Vancouver Canucks, but was dealt to Chicago alongside a second-round pick for a fourth-round selection. He spent the previous two seasons with the Blackhawks and had the best statistical production of his career. In 157 games in Chicago, he has 70 points (38 goals, 32 assists). The 31-year-old right winger can be a good player when on the ice, but is not going to put up major point totals.
There will certainly be a market to acquire Mikheyev this offseason, but having his rights puts that team in a better position to negotiate. Finding the right landing spot is critical for the winger, but an expiring asset is not going to net a big return.
Whatever the Blackhawks would get for this is not going to be much of anything. However, getting an asset of any kind for an expiring contract would be better than letting him just hit unrestricted free agency. It will be intriguing to see what a potential return for Chicago will be for the veteran winger.
