Chicago Cubs: 1x All-Star named player most likely to be traded at deadline
The Chicago Cubs are 24-12 and in first place in the National League Central Division. Currently, they hold a 2.5 game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals. Riding a seven-game win streak, their second long win streak of the season, the Cubs appear poised to be a force to be reckoned with in the National League this year.
As the season goes on, Chicago will be gauging the trade market for pitching depth. Justin Steele‘s return has been delayed and Cade Horton is out for the year. While the current rotation has held down the fort, it is inevitable that they will need to add another pitcher (or two) this summer.
Michael Conforto could be traded by the Chicago Cubs
Bleacher Report recently published an article in which they named the one player from each team that could be traded ahead of the MLB deadline. Their selection for the Cubs was Michael Conforto:
“Raise your hand if you had kind of forgotten that Conforto even signed with the Cubs until he hit that walk-off home run on Monday night. (*Raises own hand*) He hasn’t played a ton, but that dinger brought his triple-slash to .323/.436/.548 in 39 trips to the plate, all but one of which came against right-handed pitching.
“And though last season with the Dodgers was a disaster for him, there would be quite a bit of interest in Conforto as the LHB half of a corner outfield or DH platoon if the Cubs made him available right now.”
Clearly, Conforto does not have a big role in Chicago, especially with Moises Ballesteros hitting primarily against right-handed pitching as well.
As the season goes on, it stands to reason that other Cubs pitchers may need IL stints for ailments that tend to pop up every year. There are any number of teams that may be willing to part with a pitcher in exchange for Conforto’s bat.
