Chicago Cubs get top-10 starting rotation ranking despite plethora of injuries

Shota Imanaga, Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are 27-14 and in first place in the National League Central Division. After a slow start to the season that saw them dwelling in last place, they have rattled off two separate 10-game winning streaks. Very few teams in MLB history have accomplished this feat, and Chicago did it before the end of May.

Throughout their hot stretch, multiple players have stepped up in a variety of ways. What should not be lost, though, is how well the starting rotation, led by Shota Imanaga, has been performing despite the loss of so many crucial pieces.

Over the course of the off-season, Chicago made a couple of moves to bolster their starting rotation. Despite these, though, they have seen starter after starter go down with injury.

But they have kept on winning. Led by Imanaga, who is 4-2 with a 2.28 ERA, the Cubs pitching staff has weathered the storm of injuries, and was ranked eighth by Bleacher Report in their starting rotation rankings:

“They lost Cade Horton for the year after just two starts, and Justin Steele is nowhere near returning from an IL stint that began more than 13 months ago. The Cubs also recently lost Matthew Boyd to a bizarre knee injury.

“Yet, somehow, this rotation has more than held its own, thanks in large part to Shota Imanaga looking a whole lot better than he did toward the end of last season. Edward Cabrera has also proven to be a solid addition.”

One has to wonder, though, if the rotation is going to remain stable as it is. Clearly, many do not think so given the numerous trade rumors linking the Cubs to starting pitchers from losing teams.

While nothing seems imminent, the fact remains that in order to keep performing at a high level, the starting rotation is going to need a boost at some point.

Until then, it is great to recognize the early-season heroics Imanaga and Edward Cabrera have brought to the team.
