The Chicago Cubs have reason to believe that they’re fielding a special team right now.

Even after suffering through an unprecedented run of pitching injuries, they are still riding high on a 9-game winning streak (fifteen wins in a row at home) and are sitting atop the NL Central Division, tied for the best record in all of baseball.

But how long could it be before reality sets in and the team starts coming back down to earth as their projected two top starters sit on the IL, with Cade Horton lost for the season and Matthew Boyd gone until at least the All-Star break after suffering a freak meniscus injury? Ace Justin Steele also suffered a bit of a setback in his own recovery from elbow surgery last year and isn’t expected back until later in the year,

Then, there’s the bullpen, which has also been besieged by injury.

The only real option for the team to build its pitching staff for a real run at postseason glory, at this point, is via trade.

And, apparently, the Cubs front office is thinking the exact same thing.

Per MLB insider and Cubs beat writer Bruce Levine, via Twitter/X:

“According to industry sources the Cubs are one of the teams the Mets have talked to about acquiring RHP Freddy Peralta. June 1st is a target time for the Mets to either get back into the race or move the soon to be free agent. Peralta and Craig Counsell share a mutual bond.”

Although big trades like this generally don’t happen until the trade deadline, there has to be urgency within the Cubs organization to get something big and meaningful done as soon as possible. Almost three months remain until the August 3 trade deadline this year and a lot could happen between now and then.

Mets in “sell” mode?

The Mets traded for the right-handed Peralta this offseason, bringing him over from the Milwaukee Brewers to be an anchor atop the Mets rotation. So far, he’s done his job, but the Mets have been in full collapse mode anyway.

Through eight starts this year, he has a 2-3 record and a 3.12 ERA.

With Peralta eligible to become a free agent at the end of this year and the Mets going nowhere, it’s looking more and more likely that the two-time All-Star could be dealt at the trade deadline or even sooner.

The 29-year-old Peralta pitched the first six years of his major league career in Milwaukee under the guidance of manager Craig Counsell.
