Chicago Cubs recall Kevin Alcantara amid 6-game losing streak

The Chicago Cubs are desperately searching for answers amid their current six-game losing streak. After being swept by the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this week, manager Craig Counsell said he did not yet see a need for any lineup changes.

After an off-day on Thursday and yet another loss on Friday night, though, the Cubs manager is all of a sudden ready to shake things up. He told reporters last night that he was going to shake up the lineup a bit in an effort to jump-start the Cubs’ stagnant offense.

On Saturday morning, news broke that Chicago has recalled one of their best offensive prospects: Kevin Alcantara.

On Friday, Chicago placed Matt Shaw on the injured list and called up Pedro Ramirez to take his spot on the roster. Despite the fact that Ramirez is hitting .312/.375/.547 with nine home runs, 40 RBI, and 19 stolen bases this year, he did not play last night.

One might expect that he will be in the lineup tonight after Counsell promised changes, though. Additionally, Cubs fans could expect to see Alcantara in the lineup soon, as he was just recalled by Chicago on Saturday morning:

At Triple-A this season, Alcantara is hitting .242/.339/.567 with 15 home runs and 32 RBI. In 13 career Major League games, he has hit .238/.273/.238.

An outfielder, it will be interesting to see where Counsell slots Alcantara in. All of Chicago’s starting outfielders, though, are going through some significant struggles at the plate, so Alcantara could be used to give them each rotating days off.

A week ago, the Cubs were in first place in the National League Central Division. Now, thanks to their six-game losing streak, they are in third. They appear to be willing to try just about anything to break out of this funk.
