Cubs claim brother of All Star pitcher from division rival
The Cubs added more pitching depth to the organization by claiming lefty Luis Peralta from the Cardinals, per Marquee’s Taylor McGregor. The Cardinals DFA’ed him last week, just days after they claimed him from the Rockies. Peralta, 25, is the younger brother of All Star pitcher Freddy Peralta, who Cubs fans are very familiar with from his days in Milwaukee.
Peralta was added to the 40-man roster and optioned to Iowa.

What can Peralta bring?
Peralta has not pitched much in the Majors, accumulating only 31.1 career innings with the Rockies from 2024 to 2025. He sports a career 6.03 ERA, 6.31 FIP, 1.8 WHIP, 30 strikeouts, and 23 walks. Most of the damage was done last season when he surrendered 20 earned runs in 19 innings (9.47 ERA).
Cannot say things have gone well in the Minors recently, either. This season with the Rockies Triple-A affiliate, Albuquerque, Peralta gave up 14 earned runs and walked 13 batters in 7.1 innings. He did fan 14 down there, but it doesn’t do much good when the ERA reads 17.18, and he’s walked nearly as many as he’s struck out. Overall, he is a career 4.95 ERA, 1.5 WHIP, 12.3 K/9, and 5.7 BB/9 pitcher in 320 minor league innings.
Walks are clearly an issue for him, while he can strike guys out. He throws a mid-90s fastball, curveball, and occasional changeup. The curve has gotten the most whiffs, unsurprisingly, and the fastball has been beaten up by MLB hitters. Peralta’s track record is not great, and expectations should not be high, but the Cubs have found plenty of arms to rework. Plus, he is only 25.
