Jarred Kelenic elects free agency after Chicago White Sox demotion
The Chicago White Sox have been playing well throughout the season, but there have been some players who have struggled. The front office has not been afraid to be aggressive in having roster transactions. Through injuries and inconsistent play, the 26-man roster has shifted throughout the season. Jarred Kelenic leaves the Chicago White Sox after being designated for assignment
The White Sox will no longer have outfielder Jarred Kelenic in the organization after he elected free agency. He was designated for assignment on Monday, but did not have any options. As a result, he was eligible to become a free agent and not accept the DFA. He would clear waivers and will now be available for any team to pick up for the league minimum.
Kelenic has struggled at the plate this season, which has been a story throughout his career. In 19 games, he had a .226/.305/.321 slash line with one homer, four RBI, and three runs scored. The former sixth-overall pick has struggled to hit at the major league level throughout his career. Kelenic signed as a non-roster invitee late in the offseason to a one-year deal. However, things did not work out enough for him to remain on the roster.
With the call-ups of Tristan Peters, Sam Antonacci, and Rikuu Nishida, there were not many outfield spots on the Chicago roster to go around. They have Randal Grichuk and Derek Hill also on their bench, so they have the outfield depth that many teams do not have at this point. Kelenic and/or his representatives must feel he would get a chance on a team’s MLB roster. It will be intriguing to see if Kelenic is signed and if he is back in the big leagues this year.
