Rikuu Nishida is already providing the spark for the White Sox

The 2026 White Sox are finally showing signs of life after losing 102 games last season and 121 games, the most losses in an MLB season in 2024. The addition of Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami has given a much-needed jolt to an organization with his power.

Now, another Japanese player has given a spark for the White Sox. Outfielder Rikuu Nishida was called up on May 25 from AAA Charlotte. His call-up didn’t come with fanfare, like highly touted Sam Antonacci and Noah Schultz.

But Nishida went 1-for-3 with a single, and even threw out Orlando Arcia at home plate from right field in his debut.

The next night, Nishida threw out Kody Clemens at home in the top of the 10th.

He has immediately won over the White Sox fans. And they will love him even more when they learn the unusual path he took to get here.

Nishida’s story doesn’t resemble the typical rise of many Japanese major‑leaguers, who have played in Nippon Professional Baseball(NPB) before coming to America. He attended Tohoku High School, a renowned high school in Sendai, Japan, that has appeared many times in the national high school summer tournament, known as Koshien. It is also the same high school that produced stars like ex-Cub Yu Darvish and former Seattle Mariners closer Kazuhiro Sasaki.

After graduating high school, Nishida came to America and attended Mt. Hood Community College, a JUCO located in Gresham, Oregon. After two years there, Nishida earned a shot at the University of Oregon, where he won over the Ducks’ fans. At 5’6” and 150, he wasn’t the biggest player on the field. But his bat‑to‑ball skills, disruptive speed, and relentless competitiveness made him impossible to ignore.

The White Sox took him in the 11th round in the 2023 draft. A pick that barely registered at the time, but now looks like one of the organization’s savvier recent decisions.

The question now is what Nishida’s long-term role is with the White Sox. Maybe he is just holding the spot until someone else is ready. Instead, two games into his major league career, he is already making massive clutch plays that have won over the fans.

Paul Janish, the White Sox director of player development, lauded his personality as the best in the organization. He may never be a star and probably be a valuable utility man. Heck, he might be sent back down to Charlotte in a week or two. But he plays with a hustle and energy that could impact a game and become a popular guy in the clubhouse by keeping things loose.

He could be what this franchise needs as it continues to rebuild its culture from the ground up.
