The former Oregon Ducks safety earned first-team All-American honors for his performance last season. He also impressed Chicago general manager Ryan Poles and defensive coordinator Daniel Allen, especially in the combine, which led to his selection. Thieneman plays with great intensity and impacts games with his speed and ability to deflect passes from various angles.
The 21-year-old could be the game-changer the Bears have been seeking to bolster their secondary. They also brought in Coby Bryant this offseason after Kevin Byard III, Jaquan Brisker and Jonathan Owens departed in free agency.
Ryan Poles shares Dennis Allen’s reaction to Dillon Thieneman selection
The Bears uploaded a new video on YouTube on Tuesday. The clip showed the front office’s draft journey, including interviews with some of its personnel. Poles opened up about how Allen reacted after the team drafted Thieneman.
“Dennis is excited on how the draft went as well,” Poles said. “When we took Dillon, I remember him walking up to me and says, ‘I love this player.’ Not ‘I like this player.’ ‘I love this player.’”

Scouts and analysts considered Caleb Downs as the top safety prospect of this year’s draft class. However, he wasn’t in Chicago’s range in the first round. The Dallas Cowboys chose the former Ohio State star at No. 11.
The Bears sweated out picks 12 to 24, hoping that no team would take Thieneman. Things turned out well for the franchise as it got its target and took Thieneman’s name off the board as the second safety drafted. He will likely receive a lot of playing time in his rookie season and has a chance to prove that he could be a cornerstone for years to come.
Allen’s immediate reaction certianly says a lot.
