Chicago Bears hint at frontrunner for biggest position battle
After winning the NFC North and making the Divisional Round, the Chicago Bears are strong at just about every position sans the defensive line.
Drew Dalman sent the Bears a curveball this offseason when the 27-year-old center announced his retirement coming off of a Pro Bowl season in 2025. Chicago reacted quickly to the announcement, trading a fifth-round pick to the New England Patriots for Garrett Bradbury and drafting Logan Jones out of Iowa in the second round.
Unlike most of the years under general manager Ryan Poles, the Bears don’t have many position battles to keep an eye on this offseason. The battle between Jones and Bradbury for the starting center job will be the most intriguing competition this summer.
On Thursday, Johnson hinted that Bradbury was the frontrunner to win the job for Week 1 as he praised offensive line coach Dan Roushar.
“I think we got a couple of the best offensive line coaches in the business,” Johnson said, via CHGO Bears. “Garrett Bradbury impressed on day one. He was loud.”‘

The Bears can tinker with the offensive line during OTAs, but it will be hard for Jones to steal the starting job from Bradbury. The Bears believe Jones came into the league with some seasoning after playing college football for the Hawkeyes, but he might be a little behind when the pads come on in training camp.
Johnson wants to give Jones an opportunity to win the starting job, noting that the draft pick was an effort to build competition this offseason.
“The ball is in his court as far as I’m concerned,” Johnson said, via ESPN.
“He understands that, just like with everyone else, we’re looking to create competition and consistency day after day and building trust, not only with Caleb and the other quarterbacks but within that offensive line room and then obviously with the coaching staff. It’s just a matter of time to build trust.”
The Bears invested in Jones by making him the No. 57 pick. At some point, Jones will see action in the regular season, but that might come when Bradbury enters free agency in 2027.
