Chicago Cubs continue to fall in MLB power rankings after series loss to Cardinals
For a brief 24-hour period, Chicago Cubs fans believed their team had turned it around. Pete Crow-Armstrong went 4-5 at the plate with a home run and sealed a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals with an amazing diving catch in center field. A day later, though, the Cubs dropped the series finale in St. Louis, scoring just one run on an Alex Bregman solo shot.
Indeed, the Cubs have been one of the coldest teams in baseball for almost a month. While they snapped their ten-game losing streak by splitting a four-game set with the Pittsburgh Pirates, they have not won a series since May 7. Since that win, which saw Chicago improve to 26-12, they are just 6-16 and now in fourth place in the National League Central Division.
The Chicago Cubs fall out of the top-15 in latest MLB power rankings

The good news for the Cubs is that this past week saw them snap that aforementioned ten-game losing streak. However, the bad news is that they still split the series with Pittsburgh 2-2 and then lost their series to the Cardinals 2-1.
After a 3-4 week, Bleacher Report knocked Chicago down a spot in their MLB power rankings, from 15th to 16th:
“The Cubs snapped a 10-game losing streak with a win over the Pirates on Wednesday, with that rough patch serving as an unfortunate counterpoint to the two 10-game winning streaks they rattled off earlier in the year. Right-hander Ben Brown tossed seven innings of three-hit, one-run ball on Saturday, and he now has a 1.73 ERA in 26 innings over five starts since joining an injury-plagued rotation.”
Ben Brown certainly has been one of the few bright spots on the Cubs roster over the last couple of weeks. Unfortunately, it does not appear like any other pitchers are ready to step up with him. Matthew Boyd should return this week, which might help, but he was not exactly pitching well when he went down with [another] injury.
The fact of the matter is that the Cubs currently do not have the pitching necessary to make a deep run in the postseason even if they make it as they are currently constructed. In order for them to turn this season around and make some noise, they have to add pieces to both their starting rotation and bullpen.
