Chicago Bears: Momentum for stadium headed for Chicago, not Arlington Heights
Per multiple reports, the megaprojects bill that would have allowed the Chicago Bears to freeze property taxes for a new stadium at the Arlington Heights location died on Sunday.
With a midnight deadline for the Illinois General Assembly’s spring session, lawmakers are running out of time to deal with the Bears amid other pressing issues in the state, such as passing the state’s budget.
Some new ideas are making their rounds on Sunday, including one that would allow municipalities to own the new stadium, including Chicago, per CBS News.
“One idea that appeared to be gaining momentum was a plan that would allow local municipalities to set up their own stadium authority, which means Chicago could put forth a package guaranteeing the Bears the same level of property tax certainty they team would have received in Arlington Heights.
“Illinois lawmakers working on the package said the stadium would be publicly owned, but privately financed.”
Earlier in the month, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson made a push for the Bears to remain in Chicago. Multiple reports surfaced that the Bears remained in contact with the city, much to the ire of Illinois lawmakers who thought the team was only seeking a solution for Arlington Heights in the state while also flirting with a potential site in Hammond, Indiana.
In response, the Bears released a statement last week suggesting the team was only interested in the sites at Arlington Heights and Hammond, the two locations the NFL Stadium Committee deemed were viable options at this point.
But Chicago will appear to stay in the race if something gets done in Springfield on Sunday night.

More News: Illinois now making case for Indiana to get stadium
Illinois Senate Minority Leader Senator John Curran confirmed the Bears brass has stayed in touch with Chicago throughout the month.
“I think we’re still waiting for feedback from the Bears reviewing the concept, and then from there, it really would be up to the city of Chicago and their due diligence in coming up with the most competitive site and really package development package for the Bears to consider,” Curran said.
“But at the end of the day, Chicago is a world-class city. So I’m sure, you know, if they had a very competitive proposal, I’m sure the Chicago Bears would strongly consider that.”
The problem is that it’s not just up to the Bears to consider the proposal. The NFL wants the new stadium project to be completed as soon as possible either at Arlington Heights or Hammond.
It remains to be seen what the Bears think of the prospect of paying for the cost of building the stadium but having a municipality own the building.
