Dennis Hull Passes Away at 81

The Chicago Blackhawks have seen a lot of talented players go through their franchise throughout its history. Unfortunately, one of the franchise stars who spent more than a decade with the team has passed away. Let’s take a closer look at who it is and what he did during his on-ice career.

Dennis Hull passes away at 81

The Blackhawks announced on Saturday evening that former Blackhawks player Dennis Hull passed away. Known as “The Silver Jet”, Hull’s name rings with Chicago fans as the brother of Bobby Hull and the uncle of Brett Hull. Hull spent 13 of his 14 seasons with the “Black Hawks” before playing his final season with the Detroit Red Wings.

Throughout his NHL career, Hull would tally 654 points (303 goals, 351 assists). He would not win a Stanley Cup during his tenure, despite playing in three Stanley Cup Finals. However, the highlight of his career took place in the 1972 Summit Series between the Soviet Union and Canada. He intended to boycott the event due to Bobby being excluded for participating in the WHA. After receiving encouragement by his brother to play, he would score two goals and record four points in the series victory.

Hull retired at 33 years old and lived a life out of the public. The most notable post-playing career aspect was becoming the Athletic Director for the Illinois Institute of Technology.

The Chicago Blackhawks issue a statement on Dennis Hull’s passing

After news of Hull’s passing became known, Blackhawks Chairman and CEO Danny Wirtz issued the following statement:

“The Chicago Blackhawks are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dennis Hull esrlier this morning. Dennis enjoyed a distinguished career built on his scoring ability and consistency, leaving lasting contributions not only to the Blackhawks franchise, but to the game itself. Known around the league for his immense skill, toughness, and intelligence, Dennis was as dominant on the ice as he was beloved off it. He often drew on his sharp wit and sense of humor to keep the locker room loose, while his warmth and humility made everyone he met feel welcome. On behalf of the Wirtz family and the entire Blackhawks organization, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Dennis’s family, friends and teammates, and the many fans who adored him.”
