Starting pitcher returns to Chicago Cubs after IL stint
A month ago it looked like the Chicago Cubs were going to be one of the teams to beat in the National League this season. Chicago was in good shape and on top of the NL Central.
They have had two separate 10-game win streaks this season. But then it all went downhill with their trip to Atlanta and then the Crosstown Classic with the White Sox. The Cubs suffered a 10-game losing streak to drop them in the NL Central standings, that’s where they stand now.
The Cubs are looking up at Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates, sitting five games out of first place. A big reason why has been the struggles of the starting pitching and the injuries that came with it. But there appears to be some good news on the horizon as they begin a critical week.
Matthew Boyd set to return to Chicago Cubs

Matthew Boyd hit the injured list on May 6th after suffering a freak knee injury, hurting his knee while sitting down on the ground to play with his kids. He’s missed most of May with the injury but now, he’s ready to return.
Per manager Craig Counsell, Boyd made a rehab start for the Iowa Cubs on Sunday and will now join the team in Chicago on Monday:
“Everything went good, he did well,” Counsell said to reporters after Sunday’s game. “We will see him tomorrow in Chicago.”

Boyd is coming off a breakout season in 2025 and so far in 2026, he’s 2-1 with a 6.00 ERA in 24 innings pitched in five starts. He struggled in his first start but got better in each start after that.
Getting Boyd back will help the rotation and Chicago’s also expected to get starter Edward Cabrera back as well sometime soon.
Chicago begins a home series against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night before hosting the San Francisco Giants over the weekend. It’s unknown when Boyd will make his next start.
