Chicago Bears respond to Illinois’ epic failure on stadium bill
Despite a late push in the overtime session of the Illinois General Assembly, state lawmakers were unable to cobble enough votes to pass legislation that would help the Chicago Bears build a stadium at Arlington Heights or in Chicago.
The Senate came up with legislation that would allow for the Bears to fund the building of the stadium and then gift it to municipalities in exchange for not paying property taxes. The new bill was supposed to keep Chicago in the running to keep the Bears alongside Arlington Heights.
Following the epic failure early Monday morning, the Bears released a statement, reiterating their comment to only the two viable sites at Arlington Heights and Hammond, Indiana. The Bears plan to remain on schedule to finalize their plan for a new site by early summer.
“We will finalize our evaluation of both Arlington Heights and Hammond, and remain on the late spring/early summer timeline that we have previously communicated,” the statement reads, via Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. “We will provide an update when we have a decision to share.”
The spring session is over in Springfield. The only hope the Bears and Illinois have at this point is for a special session to be called for this summer.

On his X account, Illinois representative Speaker Pro Tempore Kam Buckner wrote that there were not enough votes to pass the new bill because there wasn’t enough time to discuss the legislation. Buckner is hopeful and optimistic that Illinois will continue the “conversation” on keeping the Bears.
“The truth is that proposals of this magnitude take time,” Buckner wrote. “Members need time to review details, ask questions, hear from stakeholders, and understand the long-term implications of what they’re being asked to support.
“This proposal came together late in the process, and many members simply did not have enough time to get comfortable with it.”
Buckner thinks Illinois has time to pass legislation to keep the Bears in the state before the team’s preferred timeline of deciding on Hammond early this summer.
Whether that’s a pipe dream or not depends on how serious the Bears are about moving to Hammond. At this point, Hammond is literally the only viable option unless there is a special session called.
