Angel Reese does not hold back on strong WNBA statement
Angel Reese is coming off a career-best performance on Saturday against the Phoenix Mercury. She posted a career-high 31 points on 14-of-21 shooting, along with 14 rebounds and four steals in the 99-89 win. It came just two after she recorded 20 points on 9-of-9 shooting with 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals versus the Los Angeles Sparks. The Atlanta Dream forward has showcased her elite skill set on both ends of the floor and gave a strong statement about who deserves to win the Defensive Player of the Year award.
Reese is averaging a career-high 16.3 points, with 12.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals through 36 games. More importantly, the Dream have clinched a playoff spot. They are currently fourth in the standings with a 24-13 record, and the three-time All-Star has played a significant role in the team’s success.
Angel Reese makes it clear which team the DPOY winner should come from
Reese addressed reporters after Saturday’s with Jordin Canada. She said that the DPOY winner is an Atlanta player, which her teammate agreed with.
“I think the Defensive Player of the Year is in Atlanta,” Reese said. “One to three, one of us. You can check the stats, too.”

Many consider Reese one of the frontrunners to win it, along with A’ja Wilson and Shakira Austin. However, Rhyne Howard, Canada and Reese lead the league in steals per game.
It remains to be seen who will be named DPOY by the end of the season. Reese and her teammates have been worthy contenders for the honor, but Wilson and Austin’s efforts can’t be ignored. Atlanta has seven games left on its schedule. Dominating on the defensive end during the stretch could be the difference between having the DPOY in Atlanta or in Las Vegas or Minnesota.
