Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark

Caitlin Clark often leads the Indiana Fever to victory with clutch baskets and delivers under pressure. However, that wasn’t the case on Thursday against the Las Vegas Aces. The superstar guard had an opportunity to ice the game in regulation but surprisingly missed two free throws that would have given her team a five-point lead. She also committed a costly turnover late in overtime that gave Chelsea Gray another chance to play the role of hero.

Clark recorded 20 points, three rebounds and eight assists in the 86-84 loss. However, she only made 7-of-20 shots, including 2-of-10 from beyond the arc. She also committed eight turnovers. Kelsey Mitchell top-scored for Indiana with 28 points, and Aliyah Boston supplied a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double.

The Fever can quickly turn things around with a win over the Chicago Sky on Saturday. They are on a two-game losing skid after previously winning five consecutive matchups.

Caitlin Clark holds herself accountable for Fever loss to Aces

Clark shared her honest take on who is to blame for Thursday’s defeat. She cited what she failed to do and emphasized how her missed free throws affected the game.

“Obviously, just can’t happen and those are free throws that I usually make and certainly frustrating,” Clark said. “Obviously, one of them gives us a two-possession lead and kind of cost my team there for sure. So that’s on me.”

The three-time All-Star once again made it clear that the loss in on her.

“We still battled, we still fought and we put ourselves in position to win the game and then honestly, it was me that made costly errors for us,” Clark said. “So that’s on me to help us win. That’s my job. That’s what I get paid to do.”

The 24-year-old is likely to play on Saturday despite still dealing with a back issue. Boston is also listed as probable on the injury report with a knee ailment. An Indiana win at the United Center will greatly benefit the team ahead of a two-game homestand.
