Chicago Bears lose running back for weeks after friendly fire hit

Chicago Bears running back Kyle Monangai

The Chicago Bears are now expected to be without one of its key running backs for at least the rest of the preseason.

On Sunday, running back Kyle Monangai exited practice due to a knee injury. Per Adam Hoge of CHGO Bears, defensive tackle Grady Jarrett tackled the running back from behind during the non-padded practice. Jarrett tried to back off from the tackle, but it was too late. Monangai favored his right knee.

On Monday afternoon, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler provided an update on Monangai. He hyperextended his knee and is expected to miss “multiple weeks” due to the injury.

“Source: Bears RB Kyle Monangai suffered a hyperextended knee,” Fowler posted on X. “Expected to miss multiple weeks, but per the MRI, the outcome is considered positive after a recent practice injury.”

The update was a little more disappointing than what ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday.

“Bears RB Kyle Monangai, who left practice today after injuring his knee, is believed to be ‘fine’, per source,” Schefter posted on X. “Initial tests showed his knee to be structurally sound, but the team will do an MRI to confirm.”

While the MRI outcome was a positive for Monangai and the Bears, he will miss joint practices against the Cincinnati Bengals and Tennessee Titans. Chicago will hope he can return for its season opener against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1.

The Bears have had unfortunate news with hyperextended knees in training camp. Schefter initially reported safety Coby Bryant would be out for six to eight weeks but wouldn’t need surgery on his knee. A week later, he reported Bryant had surgery on the knee, putting his return timeline in jeopardy for the postseason.

Chicago still has lead back D’Andre Swift healthy. He’s been having a solid start to the summer in training camp and could be poised for another big season for the Bears.
