White Sox’s winning weekend made even sweeter by slugging duo’s feat
The Chicago White Sox weekend could not have gone any better. They swept the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park for the first time since 2022, by scores of 9-5, 4-3, and 7-5. Sunday’s win was particularly impressive as they were down 4-1 at one point, but stormed back in the fifth and sixth innings before adding on in seventh with a Munetaka Murakami two run blast and Miguel Vargas solo shot in the ninth.
For Murakami and Vargas, their home runs in Sunday’s game brought each of them to 28 on the season. According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, it marked the first time since 2019 that two White Sox hitters have each reached 28 home runs in the same season. The last duo to accomplish the feat was Jose Abreu and Eloy Jimenez.
In 2019, Abreu launched 33 home runs and Jimenez 31. With six weeks to go in the regular season yet, it is very realistic that Murakami and Vargas surpass what that duo did eight years ago.
The Chicago White Sox’s future is bright with young sluggers leading the way
As of August 16, the White Sox not only hold a 5.5-game lead in the American League Central, but they would also enter the playoffs as the No. 2 seed and earn a bye into the Division Series. The long ball has played a significant role in getting them there, with Chicago ranking fifth in the league with 164 home runs.
Beyond Murakami and Vargas, Colson Montgomery has also played a major role in Chicago’s power production, launching 26 home runs so far this season. And there is even more power waiting in the minor leagues. Outfield prospect Caleb Bonemer has already hit 30 home runs this year, while No. 1 overall pick Roch Cholowsky possesses 60-grade power, according to his scouting evaluations.
All that said, the White Sox’s recent success has been fueled in large part by the power of their young hitters, and there is plenty of reason to believe that trend can continue. Murakami, Vargas and Montgomery have already established themselves as legitimate home run threats, while prospects like Bonemer and Cholowsky could add even more power to the lineup in the years ahead.
