Bears HC Ben Johnson doesn’t mince words on Tyson Bagent

Chicago Bears

Tyson Bagent started his first game of the season on Sunday against the New York Jets. The Chicago Bears quarterback played well, leading the team to a 23-12 win at Soldier Field. He impressed analysts and the coaching staff, including Ben Johnson. However, the head coach did not mince words about his performance.

Bagent completed 25-of-34 passes for 268 yards against one interception. He distributed the football well and maximized his weapons, leaving the defense guessing on which direction he’ll go. The Shepherd Rams product started in place of Case Keenum, who delivered a strong outing in Week 3 versus the Philadelphia Eagles. Chicago’s QB1, Caleb Williams, remains sidelined following the hamstring injury he sustained in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Bagent will once again start on Sunday when the Bears face their rivals, the Green Bay Packers, at Lambeau Field. The team improved to 3-1 for the season and have won back-to-back games despite Williams still recovering.

Chicago Bears: Ben Johnson discusses Tyson Bagent’s Week 4 performance

Johnson praised Bagent for his preparedness and showing that he is ready for the starting job. The second-year head coach also highlighted some things he can still improve on.

“He did a great job with the operation,” Johnson said. “The game didn’t seem too big for him, and yet, there’s a few missed opportunities out there as well. He wants to continue to hone in on his ball location, make sure he’s getting the ball out in front of guys properly so they can run through the catch.

“I’m pleased with where (Bagent) was at for the first week,” Johnson said. “You have a little bit of adversity; even the (T’Vondre) Sweat interception that was negated, that could easily put you in the tank. But he’s a resilient individual and he was able to power through that and make some big plays for us (later) in the game.”

The 26-year-old has a chance to build on his Week 4 performance in Sunday’s rivalry game. It’s also an opportunity for him to star under center in what is expected to be another emotionally-charged matchup. FOX will broadcast the game live starting at 1 p.m. ET.
