This time, the biggest threat isn’t simply the price of oil or gasoline. It’s something even more basic—the nitrogen fertilizer that helps grow much of the world’s food.
According to a new J.P. Morgan analysis, fighting around Iran has disrupted a major share of the world’s nitrogen fertilizer supply. At the same time, the possibility of another powerful El Niño could bring heat, drought, and scrambled rainfall just when farmers can least afford another blow.
Put those two troubles together, and you’ve got the makings of a food-price shock that could outlast the headlines by years—not weeks.
So let’s walk through what’s happening, why fertilizer may be the real battlefield, and what every homesteader, gardener, and backyard farmer ought to be doing about it.
The Nutrient Modern Farming Can’t Do Without
Here’s the thing about nitrogen: modern agriculture can’t simply shrug its shoulders and go without it.
Plants need nitrogen to produce chlorophyll, build proteins, and push out strong green growth. Without enough of it, corn turns pale, wheat grows thin, and rice fields produce fewer heavy heads of grain.
Nitrogen is the most widely used fertilizer nutrient on earth by weight. More than half of it goes into three crops that sit at the foundation of the world’s food supply: corn, wheat, and rice.
Those crops don’t just show up as cornmeal, bread, pasta, and bowls of rice. Corn and wheat also feed cattle, hogs, chickens, and dairy cows. They become cooking oils, sweeteners, starches, and ingredients tucked into thousands of grocery-store products.
That means trouble in the fertilizer market doesn’t stay in the fertilizer market.
It eventually walks right through the supermarket door.
Historically, fertilizer alone has accounted for roughly one-fifth of the cost of growing crops such as corn and wheat. When prices jump, that added cost can mean the difference between a farmer finishing the season with a little money in the bank or heading into winter deeper in debt.
Why the Persian Gulf Matters to an Illinois Cornfield

Most synthetic nitrogen fertilizer begins with natural gas. Large industrial plants use it to manufacture ammonia, which can then be turned into urea… the small white granules farmers spread across millions of acres every planting season.
For decades, the Persian Gulf became one of the world’s fertilizer workshops because the region had access to large supplies of relatively inexpensive natural gas.
Today, more than a third of the world’s exported urea reportedly comes through that region. Tankers carry it from Gulf ports to farms across Asia, South America, Europe, Africa, and beyond.
That’s where the trouble begins.
When natural-gas production slows, fertilizer plants lose their feedstock. When ports close or shipping lanes become dangerous, even fertilizer that has already been manufactured can’t easily reach the farmers waiting for it.
A fertilizer plant thousands of miles from your garden may feel like somebody else’s problem. But when a major export region goes quiet, the shock rolls outward like a hard wind across an open field.
Eventually, it reaches everybody.
The Strait of Hormuz Has Become a Fertilizer Choke Point
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the narrowest and most important shipping passages in the world. It’s usually discussed in terms of crude oil and natural gas, but fertilizer moves through those waters too.
According to J.P. Morgan’s Climate Intuition report, conflict around Iran has disrupted Gulf fertilizer production and the shipping routes needed to carry those products to world markets. Consequently, supplies have tightened and prices have climbed.
The problem isn’t solved merely by reopening a port.
First, natural-gas facilities must be operating safely. Then fertilizer plants must restart, stabilize production, and rebuild their inventories. After that, ships must be scheduled, loaded, insured, routed, and unloaded on the other side of the world.
That’s a long chain, and every link matters.
These aren’t old tractors that can be coaxed back to life with a wrench and a little baling wire. Ammonia plants operate under high pressure and temperature. Leaks can endanger workers, nearby communities, and surrounding land, so damaged facilities must be inspected and repaired carefully.
Nor does the world keep an enormous emergency fertilizer reserve comparable to strategic oil stockpiles. Fertilizer must be manufactured, transported, stored, and delivered according to the farming calendar.
When that supply chain breaks, there isn’t much cushion underneath it.
The Planting Calendar Doesn’t Care About Politics
Every gardener understands the next part in his bones: timing matters.
You can’t plant tomatoes in November and expect July’s harvest. You can’t leave seed corn sitting in the shed until midsummer and hope the field will somehow catch up.
Farmers need dependable access to fertilizer before planting and throughout critical stages of crop growth. Although some nitrogen can be applied later as a side-dressing, shortages or delays at planting can still force farmers to change their plans, reduce application rates, or take a gamble on future supplies.
Urea also needs to be handled correctly. If it’s spread on the surface and left without enough rain or incorporation, part of its nitrogen can escape into the air as ammonia. The farmer pays for fertility that never reaches the roots.
In other words, buying expensive fertilizer doesn’t guarantee the crop will receive all of it.
Therefore, even if the fighting stopped tomorrow, farmers in some regions could still face missed delivery dates, higher prices, and planting decisions made under pressure. That’s the cruel arithmetic of agriculture.
The calendar doesn’t wait for politicians, diplomats, or shipping companies to get their houses in order.
Some estimates cited in the analysis suggest fertilizer capacity could take years to recover fully if facilities suffer serious damage. Natural-gas infrastructure can be even slower and more expensive to repair.
That means the strain may arrive in waves. South American corn could feel it during one planting season. Winter wheat across the United States, Europe, and Asia could feel it during another. South Asian rice growers could be squeezed at a different point altogether.
The shock won’t necessarily hit every field at once.
It may roll around the world one planting season at a time.
We’ve Seen This Kind of Trouble Before
If this story sounds familiar, it should.
After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, supplies of potash, phosphorus, natural gas, and other agricultural inputs were disrupted. Fertilizer prices jumped, production costs climbed, and farmers everywhere began sharpening their pencils.
The USDA Economic Research Service documented how the invasion shook an already strained global fertilizer market. Those higher costs didn’t disappear at the farm gate. They worked their way into grain, livestock feed, meat, dairy products, and eventually the family grocery bill.
Then El Niño arrived in 2023.
The results weren’t identical everywhere. Wheat production held up better than feared in some regions, thanks partly to strong harvests in the United States and India. Meanwhile, rice markets tightened, cocoa production in equatorial Africa struggled, and food-importing nations found themselves competing for smaller supplies.
That’s how food shocks usually unfold. One crop survives. Another gets hammered. One country enjoys rain while another watches its fields bake beneath a white-hot sky.
But the grocery shopper eventually pays for the combined damage.
El Niño Could Pour Weather Trouble on Top
El Niño begins in the tropical Pacific Ocean, but it doesn’t stay there. Warmer-than-normal ocean water releases heat into the atmosphere and rearranges weather patterns around the globe.
Rain falls where it normally doesn’t. Monsoons weaken or arrive late. Some regions flood while others wait beneath empty skies.
Research discussed in the J.P. Morgan analysis found that strong El Niño events have historically reduced agricultural output in tropical countries by an average of roughly 3.5 percent. Some temperate regions occasionally benefit, but that’s no guarantee of protection.
The last strong El Niño brought damaging heat, drought, flooding, and weather extremes to farming regions well beyond the tropics.
What makes the present situation especially troubling is the overlap. Some countries most vulnerable to El Niño are also highly dependent on imported fertilizer from the Persian Gulf.
India and Brazil are two major examples.
Brazil is an agricultural powerhouse, but it imports much of the fertilizer needed to feed its enormous crop acreage. India must grow enough grain to feed more than a billion people while also managing heavy dependence on imported fertilizer and unpredictable monsoon rainfall.
When a major producer fears that its own cupboard may run short, exports are often the first thing restricted.
India did exactly that during the 2023–2024 rice-market disruption, placing limits on rice exports to protect domestic supplies. Those restrictions have since changed, but the episode—tracked by the International Food Policy Research Institute—showed how quickly one nation’s food-security decision can become another nation’s food emergency.
When the biggest grain exporters close their gates, there may not be another farmer waiting across the fence with enough to spare.
Farmers Are Being Handed Three Bad Choices
So what does a farmer do when fertilizer becomes scarce and expensive?
He can pay the higher price and hope the harvest is good enough to cover it. He can apply less fertilizer and accept the risk of a smaller crop. Or he can switch acreage into crops that need less nitrogen.
None of those choices is painless.
Paying more raises the cost of every bushel harvested. Applying less may reduce yield. Switching crops can flood one market while leaving another short.
Corn is especially vulnerable because it’s a hungry crop. It needs plenty of nitrogen to produce those tall green stalks and heavy ears we’ve come to expect.
In places that depend heavily on imported fertilizer, farmers often respond to high prices by cutting their application rates. They simply can’t borrow enough money—or take enough risk—to fertilize every acre as heavily as before.
The field may still look green from the county road.
But the grain cart may come back lighter in the fall.
How the Shock Reaches Your Grocery Cart
The first increase may show up in corn, wheat, rice, and cooking oils. After that, higher feed costs begin pressing on eggs, chicken, pork, beef, and dairy products.
Even vegetables can climb because commercial growers use fertilizer, diesel fuel, irrigation, refrigeration, packaging, and transportation. Every added expense gets carried down the line until somebody pays it.
That somebody is usually standing at the checkout counter.
And there’s a delay. A fertilizer shortage today may not become an empty grain bin tomorrow. It takes time for the shortage to alter planting decisions, reduce harvests, raise feed costs, and work through wholesalers and food manufacturers.
That delay can fool people into believing the danger has passed.
Then, months later, the grocery bill begins climbing again.
What This Means for Your Homestead
For those of us trying to grow more of our own food and build a little distance between our families and the global supply chain, this is the kind of slow-moving storm worth watching.
Now is the time to make compost like it matters—because it does. Save leaves, grass clippings, garden waste, spoiled hay, clean animal bedding, and kitchen scraps. Turn those materials into dark, crumbly fertility that smells like the forest floor after a spring rain.
Likewise, consider planting nitrogen-fixing cover crops such as clover, peas, beans, hairy vetch, or alfalfa where they fit your ground and growing season. Rotate hungry crops with legumes, protect bare soil, and keep as much organic matter in your garden as you can.
Animal manure can also be valuable, but it must be composted and applied wisely. Too much fresh manure can burn plants, spread pathogens, or overload the soil with nutrients. A soil test and a little patience are cheaper than trying to repair damaged ground.
This is also a good time to look over the pantry.
You don’t need to panic-buy or sweep the store shelves bare. But adding a little extra rice, flour, oats, cornmeal, pasta, dried beans, and animal feed while prices remain manageable can provide breathing room if another wave of food inflation arrives.
A deep pantry isn’t fear.
It’s patience stored in jars, buckets, and sacks.
Fertile Soil Is a Form of Independence
The larger lesson is one every homesteader already knows. Food security doesn’t begin beneath fluorescent grocery-store lights.
It begins in the soil.
It begins with a compost pile steaming on a cold morning, a stand of clover humming with bees, a row of beans climbing a fence, and a pantry lined with food you grew, dried, canned, or bought before the price jumped.
Most of us can’t reopen the Strait of Hormuz. We can’t repair a Gulf fertilizer plant, redirect an ocean freighter, or make El Niño send rain where farmers need it.
But we can improve the ground beneath our boots.
We can waste less, store more, grow wisely, and reduce our dependence on fertilizer shipped from the other side of the planet. Because the more fertility you can build into your own patch of earth, the less power a faraway war has over what your family puts on the supper table.
And right now, that may be one of the most practical forms of independence a homesteader can cultivate.
