Fun, Failure, Frustration, & Fame: Week 13
This is my reminder that fantasy football should be fun. It is also fair warning that I only play (and write about) fantasy football for fun. I have never done a paid league, and I would not suggest you use my thoughts in a betting situation. I am NOT an expert, and I play for fun.
FAILURE
Part One: My Failures
QB Lamar Jackson
While I knew Lamar Jackson wasn’t 100%, I suggested that he would rebound, particularly against a Jets team that traded away two good defensive players at the deadline. Luckily, the Ravens defense did enough to get the win, but Jackson and the offense were very underwhelming, the QB finishing 13 of 23 for 153 yards and 0 TDs. He added only 11 yards rushing on seven carries. Unfortunately, the Ravens offensive line is trash and coach John Harbaugh is too darn stubborn to bench Daniel Faalele and give someone else a shot. Combine that with Lamar not being as mobile as he usually is, and unfortunately it looks like this trend will continue.
Verdict: TREND
Part Two: This Week’s Player “Failures”
QB Jordan Love
Jordan Love had another not-so-stellar game despite leading the Packers to victory. Love finished 14 of 21 for only 139 yards and 0 TD, and added only three rushes for 15 yards. The Packers offense is not in sync right now, so I think this trend will continue.
Verdict: TREND
QB Josh Allen
Josh Allen had a rough game Thursday night against the Texans, including having to have his left shoulder examined. Allen put up yardage, going 24 of 34 for 253 yards, but he had two costly interceptions. He surprisingly did not factor into the running game, with only five carries for 20 yards. The Texans defense is great, so I expect Allen to respond with big numbers again, even though he’ll have a tough test next week when heading to Pittsburgh to visit T.J. Watt and the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. The mini-bye should help him recover – fantasy players and Ravens fans alike will be rooting for it.
Verdict: FLUKE
RB D’Andre Swift
D’Andre Swift had a forgettable game, with only eight rushes for 15 yards and a lone reception for 14 yards. Also concerning for Swift owners is that fellow RB Kyle Monangai had more rushes than Swift (12 for 48 yards). It looks like the backfield touches will be split between the two with the Bears probably riding the hot hand. That makes both of them questionable plays moving forward.
Verdict: TREND
TE Dalton Schultz
Dalton Schultz ended his streak of solid games, with one reception on four targets for a measly eight yards. As with most tight ends in the league, production is hard to predict week to week. I still think Schultz gives fantasy managers a decent chance for production and is a solid starting TE choice.
Verdict: FLUKE
TE Mark Andrews
Mark Andrews and the entire Ravens offense struggled. Andrews managed only one reception on three targets for nine yards and two rushes for two yards. A pass in the end zone that would have salvaged his day bounced right off his mitts. Andrews is still one of Lamar Jackson’s favorite targets, and with the pathetic offensive line play, I think Andrews and the short passing game will be needed, making him a solid TE play.
Verdict: FLUKE
FRUSTRATION
WR Tee Higgins concussion
Tee Higgins left the game Sunday with a concussion. Although this will help the Ravens because Higgins will miss the Thanksgiving night game, I always hate to see players get injured, especially with concussions.
QB Baker Mayfield injury
Baker Mayfield exited the game Sunday night with a left shoulder injury. We’ll have to wait and see how severe the injury is and if he will miss any more time.
FAME
Part One: What I Got Right Last Week
QB Joe Flacco
I predicted Joe Flacco would continue to struggle, and he did. Of course it didn’t help that he didn’t have Ja’Marr Chase who was suspended for spitting on Jalen Ramsey. Joe Burrow is likely back for the Ravens game, so it looks like the end of the road for Flacco and the Bengals this season.
WR Khalil Shakir
I predicted Khalil Shakir would rebound and he did, with eight catches on 10 targets for 110 yards.
WR Devonta Smith
Devonta Smith rebounded as expected with a solid game (six catches on nine targets for 89 yards).
WR Amon Ra St. Brown
I knew Amon Ra St. Brown couldn’t be held down again. He responded in a big way, racking up nine receptions on 13 targets for 149 yards and 1 TD.
RB Rachaad White
It was pretty clear that the writing was on the wall for the end of fantasy-relevance for Rachaad White with the emergence of fellow RB Sean Tucker. Even though Bucky Irving was still out, White managed only seven rushes for 28 yards and one reception for four yards. He can be dropped in all leagues.
RB Emanuel Wilson
I suggested Emanuel Wilson as a waiver wire addition due to the Josh Jacobs injury. Jacobs was out, and Wilson filled in admirably, especially with Jordan Love struggling (29 rushes, 107 yards, 2 TDs, 2 receptions, 18 yards).
RB Kenneth Gainwell
OK, I got a little lucky on this one. I suggested adding Kenneth Gainwell because I wasn’t sure if fellow RB Jaylen Warren would be able to play. Even though Warren did play, Gainwell still had a productive day with 10 rushes for 92 yards and six receptions for 30 yards.
Part Two: Who I Like on the Waiver Wire
TE Brenton Strange
Brenton Strange returned to the Jaguars lineup and had a solid day, catching all five of his targets for 93 yards. He is a solid waiver wire target this week.
WR John Metchie III
John Metchie III appears to be working as the top NYJ WR while Garrett Wilson is out. Metchie had six receptions on seven targets for 65 yards and 1 TD against a tough Baltimore defense. Although the Jets passing game can’t be relied upon, I think it will be improved with Tyrod Taylor under center instead of Justin Fields.
