The Chicago Cubs have a lot of exciting players on the brink of making the 26-man roster during the 2026 season. With names being thrown around for potential trade candidates, the team is in a position where minor leaguers may be called upon to help the team. With the World Baseball Classic taking place during 2026 spring training, one top Chicago Cubs prospect has been announced to play for Team Canada. Let’s take a deeper dive into who it is and what it means for the his chances to make the Opening Day roster.

It was announced by Meghan Montemurro of The Chicago Tribune that top Chicago Cubs prospect Owen Caissie will be part of Team Canada in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Caissie had a rough stretch in his cup of coffee in the majors last season as he finished 5 for 26 (.192) with one home run, four RBI, and four runs scored over 12 games played before suffering a concussion. However, he has stepped up as a left-handed hitter in the minors with a .937 OPS and 22 home runs over 99 games with the Iowa Cubs in 2025.

This is not his first time being part of Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic, as he also participated in the 2023 edition. He would play in three of the four games the country played and was 3 for 13 with a home run. It will be intriguing to see how he does with names like Tyler O’Neill and Freddie Freeman in the lineup as well in a major tournament like the World Baseball Classic.

What does this mean for the Chicago Cubs?

The outlook for this is a lot different for the Chicago Cubs than it is for Caissie. Fangraphs has him projected as part of the projected Opening Day roster in some capacity, but participating in the World Baseball Classic means he is away from the team for a few weeks of spring training. The current starting outfield for the Cubs includes Ian Happ, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Seiya Suzuki, so cracking the starting outfield could be difficult. However, this feels like a battle between himself and Kevin Alcantara for the fourth outfield spot.

There is a chance this does well as stepping up in the World Baseball Classic allows Caissie to play in a pressurized environment before the season begins. He could be competing with another rookie in Moises Ballesteros for a roster spot with the Cubbies as well this year. Chicago doesn’t have a chance to see him for a stretch of time as he participates, but this could only be good for the future of the Chicago Cubs going forward.
