MLB News: Chicago Cubs lose Reese McGuire to hated division rival in 2026
The Chicago Cubs have some more work to do and holes to fill on their roster ahead of the 2026 MLB season. One of the roles on the team that remains unfilled and will be open to competition is that of backup catcher.
Of course, Carson Kelly is going to be back as Chicago’s starting catcher in 2026. Last year, he hit .249/.333/.428 with 17 home runs and 50 RBI.
However, one of their backup catchers from last season, Reese McGuire, is not coming back. Instead, he is heading to one of the Cubs’ biggest rivals.
Former Chicago Cubs catcher Reese McGuire has signed with the Milwaukee Brewers
Recently, it was reported that McGuire, who appeared in 44 games for the Cubs in 2025, has signed a minor league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. The deal includes an invitation to Major League spring training:

Last season, McGuire hit .226/.245/.444 with nine home runs and 24 RBI for Chicago.
Earlier in the off-season, the Brewers decided not to bring back their own backup catcher, Danny Jansen. While his contract is a minor league deal, McGuire is firmly in the mix to earn the backup job in Milwaukee, especially if he displays a good power stroke during Spring Training.
Currently, Miguel Amaya and Moises Ballesteros are the two catchers listed on the Cubs’ depth chart behind Kelly.
Amaya hit .281/.314/.500 with four home runs and 24 RBI in 28 games for Chicago last season.
Ballesteros made his Major League debut with the Cubs last season, and played in 20 games. He hit .298/.394/.474 with two home runs and 11 RBI in that time.
If either of these two young catchers can stay healthy and maintain the flashes the showed in 2025, Chicago will be just fine in the catcher department.
