Chicago Bulls Executive VP appears to take shot at Coby White after Hornets trade

The Chicago Bulls blew it up before the trade deadline on Thursday.

More News: Bulls trade dump Coby White to struggling NBA team

The Bulls sent veteran Nikola Vucevic to the Boston Celtics. Guard Coby White is now set to play basketball with the Charlotte Hornets. Aye Dosunmu is with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

What do the Bulls have?

A bunch of second-round picks.

During his news conference on Thursday, Bulls vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas appeared to take a shot at the most recent core.

Per K.C. Johnson of CHSN, Karnisovas said Vucevic, Dosunmu, and White were good players, but were unable to get them out of the cycle of being participants in the Play-In Tournament. He also said those players couldn’t stay healthy.

“Those guys were really good for us,” Karnisovas said. “We just couldn’t get over the hump. We couldn’t get consistently good or consistently healthy.”

It’s not hard to see where the vice president was putting the blame. White missed the beginning of the season with a calf injury (not long after the Bulls tried to extend his contract).

White re-injured the calf and had to manage the issue by missing games during December and January.

Dosunmu suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last March. He’s been in and out of the lineup with various injuries this season.

One player Karnisovas recently re-signed, Josh Giddey, has missed a few recent games with a hamstring injury. The Bulls still plan to build around him.

The Chicago Bulls want to compete for an NBA championship

Chicago Bulls executive Arturas Karnisovas is not overly optimistic about the team this year.

More News: Bulls sign notable free agent to a two-way contract

Karnisovas said his goal is to rebuild the roster into a unit that can compete for an NBA championship. He didn’t think the current unit was capable of getting out of the middle.

“Being in the middle is what we don’t want to do,” he said. “We want to change that. So we have to look at different combinations of players.”

Chicago has been stuck in the middle for several seasons. Why blow it up now?

Karnisovas argues this season was the perfect time to restructure the roster. He has no regrets spending those last few springs trying to compete with the Miami Heat and failing.

What a waste.

And no lessons were learned.
