Chicago Cubs offense under fire after being shutout by Pirates
Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell had to cut bait on Shota Imanaga’s impressive start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.

With the game tied 0-0 before the seventh inning, the Cubs pulled Imanaga after 100 pitches in which he surrendered no hits and struck out nine batters.
The Pirates scored two runs in the seventh inning via a home run by right fielder Bryan Reynolds. The Cubs offense had no answers, earning six hits but scoring no runs in a 2-0 loss to Pittsburgh in front of 28,811 fans at Wrigley Field in the first contest of a three-game series.
Michael Busch, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Moises Ballesteros, Matt Shaw, and Dansby Swanson all went hitless with at-bats on Friday.
Chicago Cubs offense is facing heat for shutout loss
Following the loss to Pittsburgh, Cubs fans took to social media to call out the offense for being shutout at home against an NL Central rival.
“Every single positional player on this team not named Nico should be ashamed of themselves,” wrote a fan. “These constant abysmal showings offensively is unacceptable for a team with this payroll. Bregman, Busch, PCA, Swanson, are all basically stealing money from this team at this point.”
“Busch is 2 for 43 and 0 for 27. I’m no GM or a hitting coach, but I’d say that he has no business wearing a major league uniform. That wasn’t even good pitching he was up against. Get. Rid. Of. Him,” argued a fan.
“PCA, Swanson, Bregman are struggling big time Starting pitching has been good but need offense to get going,” posted another.
“Our offense is absolute garbage. If it wasn’t for Nico, we wouldn’t even be hitting .200 as a team,” commented a poster.
“What an embarrassing performance. Wasted a great pitching effort. Are they ever going to be more than a mediocre team this year? Definitely not living up to their potential. It’s going to be a long frustrating season,” posted another.
“I don’t care how “close” Busch is getting, he’s atrocious to start the year. Horrible loss but here comes the “it’s early” gang to reassure Cub fans. At some point soon they gotta get it together offensively period,” believes a fan.
The Cubs are now 6-7, 2.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central. Chicago will next play Pittsburgh on Saturday at 1:20 CT.
