Chicago Cubs: Shota Imanaga on Craig Counsell’s controversial decision
The bats went cold for the Chicago Cubs on Friday, and the Pittsburgh Pirates earned a 2-0 win in front of 28,811 fans at Wrigley Field.

The contest was scoreless until the seventh inning when Pirates right fielder Bryan Reynolds hit a two-run home run to score the only runs of the contest.
Right-handed pitcher Caleb Thielbar was the losing pitcher, giving up the two-run blast. He replaced Shota Imanaga to start the seventh inning.
Imanaga gave up no hits, gave up one walk, and struck out nine batters through the first six innings. Despite showing no signs of slowing down, Cubs manager Craig Counsell made a controversial decision to pull Imanaga while his offense’s bats couldn’t do anything.
Chicago Cubs chose to pull Shota Imanaga after 100 pitches

During his postgame news conference, Imanaga told reporters that he felt like he could have pitched in what became a disastrous seventh inning.
However, he felt Counsell made the right decision to pull him after reaching 100 pitches. Given the numerous injuries with the rotation, preserving Imanaga’s health might have been more important than trying to win on Friday.
“Maybe I could have gone to the 7th (inning), but regarding Counsell’s decision, I agree with him … I think that was the right decision,” Imanaga said, via Marquee Sports Network.

In the end, the decision might not have mattered too much. The Cubs needed to score to win the game, and the hits weren’t coming.
Chicago finished the contest with six hits, three more than the Pirates, but they couldn’t bring anyone home.
The Cubs are now 6-7 and at the bottom of the NL Central. They trail the 8-4 Milwaukee Brewers by 2.5 games. Chicago will next play the Pirates in the second game of their three-game series on Saturday at 1:20 PM CT.
