Chicago White Sox option struggling All-Star

Chicago White Sox, Shane Smith

Despite being the Chicago White Sox’s lone All-Star in 2025, right-hander Shane Smith has not looked good to start the season. Through three starts, the former Rule 5 Draft pick has a 0-2 record with a 10.80 ERA and 10 earned runs in 8.1 innings.

Due to his struggles, the White Sox optioned the 26-year-old right-hander to Triple-A Charlotte. To take Smith’s place on the active roster, the White Sox selected the contract of left-hander Tyler Schweitzer. Smith was the White Sox Opening Day start to begin the season.

To make room for the 25-year-old Schweitzer on the 40-man roster, the White Sox transferred infielder/outfielder Brooks Baldwin (Tommy John surgery) to the 60-day injured list.

Schweitzer had a 1.80 ERA in five innings with the Charlotte Knights this season and went 8-2 with a 4.61 ERA between Double-A (Birmingham) and Triple-A last season. Schweitzer is the White Sox’s 23rd-ranked prospect in the organization.

Coming off an All-Star season and having a solid second half in 2025 (4-1 with a 3.17 ERA in 11 starts), Smith struggled in spring training. In four starts, Smith had a 10.13 ERA and walked nine, and allowed 12 earned runs in 10.2 innings. Smith also had hit five batters, which is a concerning amount.

The walks and hit-batters continued for Smith to start the season, walking nine and hitting one batter in his first three starts. Smith’s WHIP (Walks and Hits, per Inning Pitched) is also astronomically high at 2.520, and his walk percentage is at 18.4%.

Going down to Triple-A will help Smith regain the confidence that made him dominant on the mound last season. With less pressure and the ability to work on his command, the White Sox will hopefully see Smith later in the season once he figures things out.
