Ryan Poles scores ‘big win’ with Chicago Bears 2026 NFL Draft pick
As the 2026 NFL Draft rolled on in the first round, it became clear that the Chicago Bears were going to have the option to land a safety at No. 25 if they wanted to. With both Dillon Thieneman and Emmanuel McNeil-Warren still on the board, Chicago stayed put and eventually took Thieneman with the pick.
By doing so, they were able to get their likely starting safety opposite of Coby Bryant. It also pleased the fan base as it filled a need but also gave them an unexpected player at the spot they were picking at.
Now, with the first round in the books, the Bears are earning praise. And Thursday night was a ‘big win’ for Ryan Poles.
The Athletic says Ryan Poles had a ‘big win’
Following the first round of the draft, The Athletic put out their grades and analysis on every pick. For the Bears, the decision to select Thieneman was listed as a ‘big win’ for Ryan Poles and even called one analysts favorite pick of the night:
The Bears completely turned over their safety corps this offseason, then one of the position’s top prospects plopped in their laps. Thieneman can do it all for the Bears — he’s a hitter, can cover anyone … and he’s from Indiana (perhaps the Bears’ new home?). This is a big-time win for GM Ryan Poles, and it’s my favorite pick of the first round.
The Bears raved about Thieneman’s versatility after the draft, so getting Dennis Allen a new weapon was much needed. That’s especially true after they struggled on defense last season, including the secondary.
Now, they have more needs to fill including on the defensive line. Will Poles be able to carry this momentum into day two?
