Chicago Bears expected to cut Caleb Williams’ former USC teammate

Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears

With the majority of the roster rebuilt before this year’s draft, the Chicago Bears added rookies who would come in and add competition for the 53-man roster this fall.

The Bears will have four quarterbacks taking reps during OTAs. At this point, Chicago is expected to keep Caleb Williams, Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum (who signed a two-year deal worth $5.5 million this spring) on the 53-man roster after training camp.

Following the draft, the Bears signed Williams’ former understudy at USC, quarterback Miller Moss.

Per Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Bears are hoping to keep Moss on the practice squad this fall, as he’s not expected to replace Williams, Bagent or Keenum on the 53-man roster this season.

Moss, who transferred to Louisville before the 2025 season, chose the Bears over multiple other interested teams because he believes head coach Ben Johnson and his coaching staff will put him in a better chance to succeed in the league than other organizations. He also noted that it helps that he has relationships with players on the Bears.

Moss sat behind Williams in 2022 and 2023. He played a starter in nine games for the Trojans in 2024. In 2025, he threw for 2,679 yards, 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions for the Cardinals.

Bears new offensive coordinator Press Taylor believes Moss can develop into a quarterback that can play in the league.

‘‘A player like this has the potential to stick around in the league and potentially play, which is our mission,’’ Taylor said. ‘‘I don’t think you’re ever going to be disappointed to have a quarterback room full of a lot of guys who can play. That’s a great problem to have.’’

While the practice squad is the most likely place Moss will start his career in Chicago, there is a chance he could make the 53-man roster for the regular season if the Bears trade Bagent. Bagent has been the subject of trade rumors, and he could fetch significant draft capital if he has another impressive preseason.
