Chicago Bears lose critical starter to Buccaneers in free agency
The Chicago Bears used to have consistency on special teams at a key position.
The Bears now have a revolving door at long snapper.
Long snapper Patrick Scales signed with Chicago in 2015. He remained with the Bears through the 2024 season when he suffered a back injury and was placed on injured reserve in 2024. Chicago signed former Notre Dame long snapper Scott Daly as Scales’ replacement, and he held the long snapping duties in 2024 and 2025.
Daly will not rejoin the Bears for the upcoming season, and special teams coach Richard Hightower is losing a starter at a critical position for the team. Per Chris Emma of The Score, Daly signed a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Luke Elkin and Beau Gardner are on the 90-man offseason roster. Both will have an opportunity to replace Scales, though they have not snapped in a regular-season contest.
“Scott Daly, the Bears’ long snapper the last two seasons, is signing a deal with the Buccaneers,” Emma posted on X. “It leaves a void to fill for the special teams battery. Luke Elkin and Beau Gardner are in line to compete for the job, though neither has ever snapped in a regular-season game.”
Replacing a long snapper isn’t always easy, and starting one who isn’t consistent can lead to problems. The Bears need a snapper that gives their kickers a chance to execute punts and field goal attempts.
If the Bears don’t bring in a veteran long snapper before training camp, the team will have a serious question mark about special teams heading into the preseason.
