Stephanie White hits Indiana Fever with reality check after disappointing loss

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White

Stephanie White and the Indiana Fever entered the season as one of the favorites to win the title. However, things did not go as planned in their season opener.

The Dallas Wings defeated the Fever on Saturday, 107-104. Kelsey Mitchell led four players who scored in double digits with 30 points on 11-for-22 shooting. Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark contributed 23 and 20 points, respectively, but it wasn’t enough to secure the victory. Makayla Timpson came off the bench and scored 11 points.

Indiana struggled on defense, and Dallas converted 59.1% of its field-goal attempts. Arike Ogunbowale, Odyssey Sims and Paige Bueckers combined for 62 points and six three-pointers. The Wings also moved the ball well and recorded 26 assists.

Clark had a chance to send the game into overtime, but she missed a deep three-point attempt.

Stephanie White discusses what the Indiana Fever need to improve on

White highlighted the Fever’s lack of discipline on defense during her postgame availability. The veteran coach detailed what she believed contributed to her team’s season-opening loss.

“We got to be more disciplined,” White said. “The difference in their uncontested looks from three, sometimes we were over-rotated when we didn’t need to be.

“Sometimes we have coverage breakdowns unnecessarily. We were hanging around, not going to the offensive boards but not getting back to transition defense. All correctable things, like fouling jump shooters. All detail-oriented things. We’ve just got to be better, we know that. The good thing is it’s all correctable.”

White hit her team with a reality check amid their title aspirations this season. It is clear that it’s going to be a tough road ahead for the Fever.

Indiana will have three days before their next game and will hold several practices to address White’s concerns. The team will need to focus on bench scoring in their next matchups, as only three players scored during Saturday’s game.

The Fever will return to action on Wednesday. They will visit the Los Angeles Sparks, who will open their campaign on Sunday versus the Las Vegas Aces.
