Chicago Cubs: How the MLB cap proposal and labor dispute would affect the Cubs

Chicago Cubs, Tom Ricketts

Chicago Cubs fans—as fans do—are already talking about ideas and concerns for 2027. But if the labor-management conflict keeps escalating the way it seems to be escalating, there may not even be a 2027 season.

On Thursday, owners revealed their initial economic proposal ahead of negotiations to renew the MLB labor agreement. Their opening proposition—and the central idea to their whole play—is already a full-stop deal-killer right off the bat.

MLB owners have proposed a salary cap of $245.3 million for all teams, as well as a salary floor of $171.2 million guaranteeing minimum spending. There’d also be a 50-50 revenue split across the board.

“The biggest issue we need to solve next to continue to grow the game off the field is fixing the payroll disparity unseen in any other major U.S. sport,” league spokesman Glen Caplin said in a statement issued to media. “Ultimately the game is about hope and competition and too many fans in too many markets have too little hope their team has a fair chance to win.

“Our salary cap and-floor proposal levels the playing field while sharing baseball revenue with the players 50-50 as we grow the game together.”

Labor war talk is escalating

The players association has long fought the idea of a salary cap and has been utterly unbending in their opposition. The 232-day strike of 1994-1995 was primarily over a cap proposal. Another long-term strike was averted in 2022 when the owners caved on their insistence on a cap.

This time, however, management seems willing to dig in and fight this one out.

The players also appear to be ready for a long, ugly fight.

“For generations, our members have fought against cap systems because they harm players at all levels, erode or eliminate contractual guarantees, pit player against player, lead to more work stoppages, not less, and get worse for players over time,” players union interim director Bruce Meyer responded in a statement.

“Baseball is experiencing unprecedented momentum and owners are enjoying record viewership, revenues and franchise values. Billionaire owners are not seeking to cap their profits or asset values, only player salaries. This isn’t out of generosity or a desire to protect the game’s well-being. It’s a play to control costs, increase profits and maximize franchise values — all at the expense of players past, present and future.”

How this would affect the Cubs

So, how would this directly affect the Cubs, other than missed games in 2027?

According to payroll estimates posted by CBS Sports, the Cubs, with total spending of $249.7 million, would need to trim just about $4.4 million to comply with the proposed payroll cap.

Twelve teams, including division rivals Milwaukee Brewers, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Cardinals, would have to spend more to meet the proposed minimum spending threshold. In the case of the Brewers, specifically, they’d have to spend about $31.5 more in 2027 and beyond to comply with the new proposed minimum spending requirement.

This upcoming labor battle and a possible cap will clearly have an impact on how Chicago conducts its business this offseason as several veteran assets—such as Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, Matthew Boyd, Seiya Suzuki, Jameson Taillon, and Carson Kelly—could become eligible for free agency at the end of this 2026 season.
