Chicago Cubs named as ideal landing spot for Met and former Brewer Freddy Peralta
The Chicago Cubs keep winning—eight in a row overall and fourteen in a row at home—while their pitchers keep getting injured.

The latest injury is of the freak variety as, on Wednesday, Opening Day starter Matthew Boyd suffered a meniscus injury playing with his children that would require surgery. As of this writing, the Cubs do expect him back, but the return may not be until some point after the All-Star break.
It’s certainly been a strange year so far as the injuries pile up along with the wins.
The problem is that, at some point, reality will set in and the team won’t keep being able to will their way through glaring pitching weakness and lack of depth.
The team recognizes this, as president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer has been acknowledging that he’s already looking for trade options.
One very viable option is over in the NL East, on the flailing New York Mets.
Freddy Peralta to the Cubs?

Right-handed starter Freddy Peralta was brought over from the Milwaukee Brewers to be an anchor atop the Mets rotation. He’s been doing his job, but the Mets all around him have not.
Through eight starts this year, he has a 2-3 records and a 3.12 ERA.
But with Peralta becoming a free agent at the end of this year and the Mets going nowhere, it’s looking likely that the two-time All-Star could be shipped out at the trade deadline or even sooner.
And, well, why not to the Cubs? Preferably sooner rather than later.
Curt Bishop of SI.com recently named the Cubs as one of two logical landing spots for the former Cubs NL Central nemesis:
“The Chicago Cubs are at the top of the National League Central and have won eight consecutive games, but their pitching staff has taken a lot of hits. Left-hander Matthew Boyd is back on the injured list due to knee troubles, and Cade Horton had Tommy John surgery.
The Cubs need somebody to eat innings and carry the torch in the rotation, and Peralta could be that guy. A trade to the Cubs would also reunite him with his former manager Craig Counsell, who was in charge in Milwaukee from 2016-23.”
A perfect fit

Jim Bowden of The Athletic also recently named Peralta as one of the top pitchers likely to be traded at the deadline.
Per Bowden:
“While he hasn’t been quite as good as he was last year with Milwaukee, he’s pitched to his career norms and has given the Mets reliable innings every five days.
Peralta’s command isn’t always perfect, but he typically misses bats, has one of the best changeups among starters and his four-seam fastball is very effective. He’s made at least 30 starts in each of the last three seasons.”
With the Cubs overstocked with prospects at the Triple-A level who have no real path to an every day gig with the big league squad, it might be time to start emptying out Iowa. And adding a proven ace-level starting pitcher for a team headed to a postseason run would be a smart move.
