Chicago Bears urged to sign All-Pro to fix biggest weakness
If there was a poll of most fans of the Chicago Bears, the defensive line would be the No. 1 worry heading into OTAs this spring.
The Bears didn’t add a pass-rusher in Day 1 or Day 2 of the draft after sitting on their hands in free agency this spring. It’s an area of worry for Chicago, who has the potential to make a Super Bowl run in Caleb Williams’ third season being under a rookie contract.
However, Aaron Schatz of ESPN thinks the Bears have another problem. He believes slot receiver is the biggest hole on the roster after the 2026 NFL Draft. He thinks general manager Ryan Poles should consider signing veteran receiver Deebo Samuel to fill that need.
“The Bears use a lot of two tight-end sets,” Schatz wrote. “However, they still were in 11 personnel 52% of the time last season, so they need to have a third starting receiver to go with Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III.
“Right now, that’s veteran Kalif Raymond, but Raymond is 31 and has had less than 300 yards in each of the past two seasons. The other alternative is third-round rookie Zavion Thomas. Deebo Samuel would be a really interesting free agent signing here.”

Samuel earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors with the San Francisco 49ers in 2021. He recorded 72 receptions for 727 yards and five touchdowns last season for the Washington Commanders.
Frankly, I’m not sure the Bears really need another slot receiver this offseason. Chicago needs to see what Thomas can do as a rookie.
Regardless of what the Bears have at receiver, tight end Colston Loveland was brought in to have a similar role as that of a slot receiver. He led the Bears in receiving last year, and needs to get more touches this fall.
Chicago doesn’t need to spend money on Samuel on top of adding the talent at receiver they did this offseason. The Bears need to spend their limited cap space at defensive end/and or defensive tackle.
