Chicago Cubs: What Conforto’s walk-off HR says about team’s undervalued strength
The Chicago Cubs won their sixth in a row—and twelfth in a row at home—against the surprisingly sharp division rival Cincinnati Reds Monday night via 5-4 nail-biter. A ninth inning rally which ended with a Michael Conforto pinch-hit walk-off home run to win the game had Wrigley Field rocking.

Chicago is now two games atop the NL Central Division with a 23-12 record, holding the second best record in the National League and the third best in all of baseball.
Conforto’s game-winner—which came after a Pete Crow-Armstrong triple and Nico Hoerner sacrifice fly to tie the game—still has teammates and fans glowing.
“What Michael did, it’s so hard,” Manager Craig Counsell told reporters after the game. “He didn’t have an at-bat this weekend. It’s no at-bats in four days. There’s nobody on base. But, he’s got the ability to do that. And he got a pitch up and put a great swing on it…Before the home run, he puts together a good at-bat just to get to that pitch. [I] respect how hard that at-bat is, and to deliver in that situation is just really hard to do and should make you enjoy it even more.”
Conforto and the deep Cubs bench

But beyond the veteran outfielder’s tale of “castoff to walk-off” redemption this season, the bigger story centers around the Cubs’ much improved bench, which has become a real asset.
Last season, the bench was a liability more than anything.
The 40-year-old Justin Turner proved himself to be too limited. There was no real fourth outfielder. The infield backup situation was just a revolving door of subpar hitting and disappointing defense. As the team made it’s way to the postseason, they had to accept the reality that the starting eight would just not be able to take time off to rest and re-energize.
This year, however, is a different story.
Matt Shaw has excelled in his spot as super utility man, wielding a solid and increasingly mature bat while spending time at third base, second base, first base, and at all three outfield positions. Moises Ballesteros, as a the team’s firmly established designated hitter, has afforded the luxury and flexibility of having a third catcher on the 26-man roster. The veteran Conforto, meanwhile, is about as secure a fourth outfielder as one can have.
An asset down the stretch

The overall depth of this 2026 team also makes for great situational pinch-hitting possibilities, as was shown in Monday’s win when the lefty Conforto replaced the right-handed Shaw against Reds closer Emilio Pagan.
Per Jesse Rogers of ESPN:
“Cubs pinch hitters have a 1.068 OPS in 33 AB’s this season after Michael Conforto’s walk off homer against the Reds tonight.”
The benefit of having so much depth should really be felt later in the season when fatigue and injury start to enter the picture for the every day players. The versatile Cubs bench has recently allowed for Dansby Swanson and Nico Hoerner to take days off while they dealt with minor injury issues.
The eventual return of injured first base pickup Tyler Austin—targeted for post-All-Star break—should add even more depth to the Cubs roster.
