Chicago Sky waive former first round pick
It’s clear the Chicago Sky are moving in a new direction with their slew of moves this offseason. Just a few weeks after the team traded former first-round pick and fan favorite Angel Reese, the team has now made a big decision on another former pick.
On Monday, the Sky officially waived guard Hailey Van Lith who was the No. 11 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. It’s a bit of a shocking move as Van Lith only played one season with the Sky and had limited playing time.
After having a standout career in college including at LSU, she struggled with a role in her rookie season. Van Lith averaged 3.5 points per game in 12.4 minutes.
Hailey Van Lith doesn’t last long with Chicago Sky
Despite being the No. 11 overall pick, the Sky are giving up on Van Lith already. Last season, she suffered an ankle injury that caused her to spend the offseason rehabbing it. But in her first preseason game, she went 8-for-8 from the field, finishing with 20 points.
However, her struggles in her rookie season are a big reason why they want to move on. She shot just 16.1 percent from the three-point line and had primarily a reserve role. The ‘style of play’ from HVL was also cited as a reason why the Sky are moving on.
The move hurts a little more as the Sky basically gave up the No. 11 overall pick in the 2026 draft to the Minnesota Lynx who then traded the pick to the Washington Mystics.
Now, Van Lith could return to the Sky in a development spot but would need to first clear waivers. That’s unlikely as there is an ESPN report that she’s already in discussions with other teams.
