Fever coach Stephanie White addresses referee frustration in loss to Wings

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White

The Dallas Wings defeated the Indiana Fever 107-104 on Saturday in a physical season opener. A sellout crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse watched both teams battle in a tightly contested matchup, with emotions running high. After the game, Fever head coach Stephanie White addressed player frustration following more than 50 fouls called.

Ahead of the 2026 season, the WNBA implemented stricter officiating to reduce excessive physicality. As a result, the number of foul calls during the game was significant. Referees whistled 28 fouls on the Wings and 25 on the Fever.

Fever star Caitlin Clark was among the players visibly frustrated with some of the calls. The star guard committed five turnovers, including three offensive fouls, while facing relentless defensive pressure from Dallas.

At one point before the second-quarter buzzer, Clark slammed the ball to the floor and appeared to voice a grievance to White. She also appeared frustrated after being called for an offensive foul when Wings forward Aziaha James drew a charge on her.

Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White defends stricter officiating

After the loss, White acknowledged the frustrations caused by strict officiating. She called it a difficult but necessary step for the sport’s growth.

“Look, like I told [our players] … this is what we want,” White told reporters. “We need to overcorrect, so to speak, so that we have freedom of movement. So it’s a free-flowing offense. In all of our offseason, we have asked officials to call everything.

“The challenge and the question sometimes is: Is it consistent? So that’d be the next growth phase and growth area. But this is what we need to clean up, some of the stuff we saw last year. So there is going to be frustration early, but it’s necessary.”

The WNBA has increased fines for technical fouls, flagrant fouls and flopping under the league’s new collective bargaining agreement. To reduce excessive physical contact and create a more fluid style of play, the league has increased these penalties to 2.5 times their 2025 level.

Clark is known for openly showing her emotions on the court, and that was the case again on Saturday. This game marked her return after missing much of last season due to injuries. She delivered a strong performance, finishing with 20 points, seven assists and five rebounds. However, her effort was not enough to secure a win.

It may not have been the season opener the team wanted, but Clark and the Fever will look to bounce back on the road. They will travel west to face the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday.
