Sophie Cunningham turns heads with decision during Indiana Fever game

Sophie Cunningham helped lead the Indiana Fever to a dominant 105-57 victory over the Nigeria Women’s National Team on Saturday night. The Fever wrapped up their preseason at Gainbridge Fieldhouse with a strong performance.

Indiana never trailed in the game and led by as many as 49 points. The team built a 41-point halftime lead behind strong defense and efficient offense. They scored 70 points in the first half and controlled the tempo throughout the game.

The Fever shot 14-of-31 from three-point range, finishing at 45% from deep. Nigeria missed all 12 of its three-point attempts and struggled to find offensive rhythm. Indiana forced 25 turnovers and converted them into 32 points. The team also recorded 26 assists, compared to Nigeria’s eight.

During the first quarter, Cunningham turned heads with a bold decision that sparked early momentum. Following a quick steal, the 29-year-old guard confidently launched a pull-up three-pointer in transition without any hesitation.

A clip posted on X showed the aggressive shot that extended Indiana’s lead to 10-2 with seven minutes left.

Sophie Cunningham draws attention in Indiana Fever win

Social media users quickly shared their thoughts on the veteran guard’s bold scoring play.

“She didn’t even think about stop bang, in. She knew it was in,” one fan wrote.

“Love Sophie! She hustles, get steals, drains 3’s,” another said.

“That was a freaking sweet pull up three, she owns that exact spot,” one user noted.

“No need for narratives it was just the right play,” another posted.

However, one observer suggested Cunningham may have been frustrated with the early ball distribution, which led to her taking the shot.

“3 minutes into the game I am sure she is angry about not getting the ball passed to her,” the spectator commented. 

Another fan joked, “Coach benched her after that. Lol How dare she score without permission.”

Cunningham finished the night with eight points during her 12 minutes of active play on the court. Kelsey Mitchell led the team with 17 points in a balanced scoring effort. Damiris Dantas had 16 points, while Caitlin Clark and Makayla Timpson both finished with 12 points.

The matchup served as the finale of a three-game U.S. exhibition tour for the Nigerian national team, D’Tigress. Nigeria previously lost to the Los Angeles Sparks, 89-63, on April 25 and lost to the Minnesota Lynx, 88-79, on April 27.

The preseason games were designed to help prepare Nigeria for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin in September. These exhibitions are historic, as Nigeria is the first African team to compete against WNBA teams in this format. 

Indiana finished its preseason with a 2-1 record. Now, the team prepares to host the Dallas Wings for the regular-season opener on Saturday. This upcoming home matchup marks the official start of the 2026 WNBA campaign for the Fever.
