Chicago Bears want star’s contract issue over with before training camp
The Chicago Bears entered the offseason with no pressure to give stars big contract extensions.
That will change in 2027 when 2024 first-round picks quarterback Caleb Williams and wide receiver Rome Odunze are eligible for a new deal.
The Bears have hit on their first-round picks since 2023, and now the No. 10 pick in that draft, Darnell Wright, could be in line for a big pay raise before the start of the regular season.
Per Courtney Cronin of ESPN, Chicago wants to give Wright a contract extension before training camp in late July.
“The Bears would like to get an extension done with the 2023 first-rounder before training camp, which is typically when they’ve struck new deals in the past (Cole Kmet in 2023, DJ Moore in 2024),” Cronin wrote.
“Despite playing most of last season with a torn UCL, Wright put together the best season of his career and earned second-team All-Pro honors.”

Wight has appeared and started in 49 games in his career, missing just two games total (one in the 2024 season and one in 2025). Chicago believes he’s continuing to show improvement.
“He just continues to get better,” Bears head coach Ben Johnson said. “When you watch us on offense, we’re certainly a little bit more right-handed than left-handed, and that is with him in mind. I think he’s one of those tackles that’s a powerful player and can displace guys off the line of scrimmage.”
The Bears immediately plugged Wright into the lineup as the right tackle. He’s been a solid player at that side of the ball. Per Pro Football Focus, Wright was ranked at the No. 14 offensive tackle in the league last season.
Based on how the top right tackles in the league are paid, Wright could command anywhere from $25 million to $30 million per season.
