Bears’ Ben Johnson highlights 2 WRs making most of training camp opportunity

Ben Johnson, Chicago Bears

When it comes to Chicago Bears wide receivers, Rome Odunze and Luther Burden are the unquestioned leaders at the top. Players like Khalif Raymond, Zavion Thomas and Jahdae Walker are battling for firther opportunities in the passing game.

But with head coach Ben Johnson calling the shots, he is looking for as many playmakers as possible. Both Burden and Thomas have missed time in training camp with injuries. In their absence, Johnson has been impressed with the play of Kaden Davis and Scotty Miller, via his Thursday press conference.

“A guy like Kaden Davis has made plays almost every single day. Scotty Miller has made plays,” Johnson said. “Those guys are really fast, gives them more an opportunity to get reps with the ones and with Caleb [Williams].”

Overall, Johnson has been more than pleased with the Bears’ wide receiver room throughout camp. He said their speed is evident no matter who is on the field. Of course, Chicago wants to be as healthy as possible. But if further injuries were to arise, Johnson is confident with the options currently on the roster.

Davis originally began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos in 2022. He has bounced around the league ever since, signing with five franchises including the Bears. Davis even has a pair of stints in the UFL.

The receiver has yet to catch a pass at the NFL, appearing in three games on special teams. Because of that, it may be difficult to imagine him having a significant role on offense. But at the very least, Davis is on Johnson’s radar.

Miller has been with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the past two seasons, catching just 14 passes for 131 yards. However, the receiver is coming to Chicago with 99 receptions for 1,216 yards and six touchdowns over his seven-year NFL career. He is also a former Super Bowl champion.

There is no guarantee that either wide receiver makes the final roster. But their chances would become even greater with a strong showing in the preseason.
