Chicago Bears projected to lose out on top free agent edge rusher to NFC North rival
There have been rumblings of a potential Chicago Bears reunion with dominant edge rusher Khalil Mack when free agency begins, to fill a glaring need on coordinator Dennis Allen’s defense.
However, those plans might need to be put on hold, given that GM Ryan Poles and Chicago have limited cap space and may be more inclined to invest a top draft pick on a young edge rusher rather than go shopping at the top of the free agent market.

Much like the Bears, the Lions have a pressing need to add an edge rusher opposite All-Pro Aidan Hutchinson.
Over at ESPN, NFL analyst Aaron Schatz put together a list of an ideal free agent signing for every team across the league, including Detroit signing Mack out from underneath the Bears, a potential nightmare scenario not just for Allen but quarterback Caleb Williams, as well.
“The Lions’ top need is finding pass-rush help for Aidan Hutchinson,” Schatz explains, for ESPN. “So why not aim for an established veteran at that position? Despite sitting out five games in 2025 because of an elbow injury, Mack still finished with 5.5 sacks and 28 pressures.
“Detroit isn’t swimming in cap space, but it should be able to convince Mack to take a pay cut so he can chase a Super Bowl ring. Mack’s former Chargers teammate Joey Bosa would also fit the bill if he doesn’t return to Buffalo.”
Mack, 35, is unquestionably on the back-end of his career and could be out to chase a ring with his next contract, but is still a productive edge presence.
Last season, Mack produced 5.5 sacks and has produced 34.5 sacks in his four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Mack played four seasons with the Bears, from 2018 through the 2021 campaign, posting 36 sacks, but Chicago may struggle to outbid fellow contenders to make a Windy City revival part of Mack’s future.
