Michael Busch has already earned the respect of Chicago Cubs star
The addition of Alex Bregman gives the Chicago Cubs one of the best infields in all of baseball. Bregman will man third while Dansby Swanson and Nico Hoerner play in the middle infield. But first baseman Michael Busch is someone who isn’t getting a lot of attention in terms of what he can do at first base.
That is until Bregman came along.
The former Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox slugger has been in the game for a while and knows what makes a good ballplayer. Ahead of the start of the season later this month, Bregman had a big compliment for Busch as Spring training rolls on.

After the Chicago Cubs acquired Busch in 2024, he put together an impressive 2025 campaign. Busch held first base down for the Cubs and hit .261/.343/.523 with 34 home runs and 90 RBI. It may have felt like a quiet season for Busch outside of Chicago and judging by Bregman’s reaction, he approves.
Patrick Mooney of The Athletic wrote on Busch, including a tidbit where he says Bregman took notice of Busch’s stats which appeared on the video board during Friday’s exhibition game:
“I’m standing next to Bregman,” Counsell said Saturday, mimicking Bregman’s facial reaction while telling the story. “Bregman was like, ‘Wow.’”
Those totals did not include the four home runs Busch blasted in October, when he emerged as one of the team’s most dangerous hitters in the playoffs.
Busch is looking to build off of his breakout year in 2025 and make the Cubs infield and lineup that much more dangerous. There are some question marks in terms of a backup at first base but the starting job is in good shape.
Another big year for Busch will pay off for the Cubs who acquired him for prospects Jackson Ferris and Zyhir Hope.
