Hunter Harvey, Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs have been forced to put yet another pitcher on the shelf.

More News: Chicago Cubs: Should Counsell take the blame, not Thielbar, for Saturday’s loss?

Sunday morning, it was announced that the Cubs were placing right-handed reliever Hunter Harvey on the 15-day IL (retroactive to April 9) with right triceps inflammation. They’ve called up lefty Charlie Barnes from Triple-A Iowa to fill Harvey’s roster spot.

The Harvey injury is just the latest in a long string of health issues that have besieged the Cubs pitching staff less than three weeks into the regular season.

More News: Chicago Cubs president on defense over Cade Horton disaster

On April 3, emerging ace Cade Horton was pulled from the second inning of his start with “forearm discomfort” that, upon medical review, turned out to be an elbow injury that requiring season-ending surgery.

Shortly after that horrible news, Opening Day starter Matthew Boyd would be placed on the 15-day IL with a left biceps strain. Most recently, reliever Phil Maton was placed on the IL with right knee tendonitis. Chicago also has Justin Steele, Porter Hodge, and Jordan Wicks currently on the IL.

This Hunter Harvey news, however, shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

Since being selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round of the 2013 draft, Harvey has been touched by injury in every single season of his professional baseball career. In total, over 13 seasons of minor league and major league play, he’s only pitched an average of less than 35 innings per year. As a major-leaguer, he’s averaged just around 26 innings per season.

In 2025, an assortment of injuries led to him pitching only 10.2 innings for the Kansas City Royals.

All in all, the 31-year-old has had several elbow issues (including Tommy John surgery in 2016), shoulder issues, leg injuries, an oblique strain, and a sports hernia. Now, he can add “right triceps inflammation” to the list of physical woes.

Despite his long history of injury, the Cubs still saw fit to sign him to a one-year, $6 million contract with an option for 2027. When healthy, Harvey has elite-level stuff with a fastball that sits between 96-99 mph and can touch 100 on occasion. Unfortunately, he’s usually not healthy for long.

Signing Harvey this past offseason was considered a roll of the dice by most analysts. If things turned out positively, he profiles well as a closer-type who could serve as backup to current closer Daniel Palencia. The season is still young, so he may eventually come back into the pen and become who the Cubs signed him to be. As of right now, he’s got a 6.75 ERA through 4 appearances as a Cub.

Taking Harvey’s spot…

The 30-year-old Barnes will be taking Harvey’s bullpen spot in the meantime. The former Minnesota Twin was picked up this offseason on a minor league deal after three seasons in the Korean league and one year in the Cincinnati Reds organization. He was 3-0 with a 2.38 ERA in 3 appearances with the Iowa Cubs this year.
