Chicago White Sox biggest regret of the 2026 off-season revealed
The Chicago White Sox are, unfortunately, back in a familiar spot: last place in the American League Central Division. After sweeping the reigning AL Champions, the Toronto Blue Jays, the White Sox were swept, at home, by the Baltimore Orioles. They now sit at 4-8, tied with the Detroit Tigers for the worst record in the league.
Earlier this week, Chicago made the decision to demote 2025 All-Star and 2026 Opening Day starter Shane Smith to Triple-A. Through three starts this year, Smith pitched just 8.1 innings and has a 10.80 ERA.
With is demotion, in combination with his ineffectiveness, has left the White Sox in an even more dire position regarding their starting pitching than they already were.
The Chicago White Sox should have added more veteran pitchers

If any team is going to compete in the Majors, they must have quality starting pitching. As obvious as this sounds, the fact remains that many teams, including the White Sox, simply do not have it. What is more, they do not invest finances into it on the free agent market.
This particular shortcoming has been identified by Bleacher Report as Chicago’s biggest off-season mistake:
“Munetaka Murakami has been one of the top power hitters in baseball early in his rookie season, making the two-year, $34 million deal he signed with the White Sox look extremely team-friendly.
“But while a young offensive core is starting to form on the South Side, this team is still light years away in terms of pitching. Seranthony Domínguez did get a two-year, $20 million deal to anchor the bullpen in the offseason, but there isn’t a similar stabilizing veteran force in the starting rotation, even if Erick Fedde has a bounce-back season.
“As the White Sox try to avoid their fourth consecutive season of 100-plus losses, they seem like a team that would have benefitted from veteran additions to both the starting rotation and bullpen.”
The addition of Munetaka Murakami was definitely a positive for the White Sox. While his strikeout totals are high, he is among the league leaders in home runs and still draws plenty of walks.
Indeed, it is the pitching, particularly the starters, who have let Chicago down early in the season. Erick Fedde, it could be argued, was their biggest off-season veteran signing in this regard, and he is coming off a season in which he had a 5.49 ERA.
Everyone knows the White Sox are still a couple of years away from being serious competitors in the division; but it would have been nice to see some veteran pitchers added to the roster to help the young arms along the way.
